Monsanto Company is facing a new Roundup cancer lawsuit, which was filed by a man alleging he developed mantle cell lymphoma from the popular weedkiller.

The man claims the mantle cell lymphoma diagnosis was caused by regular exposure to Roundup’s main ingredient glyphosate, which has recently come under public scrutiny for its allegedly carcinogenic nature.

Plaintiff Stephen C. filed this Roundup cancer lawsuit raising allegations that Monsanto Company failed to warn him that their product could cause various forms of cancer, including mantle cell lymphoma.

Glyphosate is an herbicide that is specifically designed to kill plants with a specific genetic strain that is found in most weeds, while leaving the desired plant life unharmed. However, glyphosate has been linked to various cancers like mantle cell lymphoma, after consumers inhaled the dangerous fumes.

Roundup has been on the market for over 40 years and is one of the most popular weedkillers in the world. This product is used on numerous commercial nurseries, farms, golf courses, and suburban yards throughout the country, with glyphosate killing off unwanted weeds to ensure the healthy development of crops.

With these benefits in mind, Stephen had used Roundup for typical purposes between the 1980s to 2012. During this time, Stephen had followed all product instructions and used all recommended precautions mentioned. The product’s label allegedly failed to mention potential carcinogenic effects, and Monsanto Company failed to disclose these facts to him and other consumers.

According to the Roundup cancer lawsuit, Stephen was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma on Dec. 19, 2011, and has significantly impacted his quality of life. Stephen opted to file legal action against Monsanto Company, after discovering that Roundup’s main ingredient had been shown to increase the risk of lymphoma development.

Overview of Roundup Cancer Correlation

Researchers had reportedly begun studying the effects of glyphosate and other pesticides, after noting a number of farmers had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had begun to suspect a correlation back in the 1980s.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had recently released a report in March 2015, which concluded that glyphosate is linked to cancer development. The report consisted of three studies from the United States, Canada, and Sweden, with the oldest study stemming back to 2001:

  • Canada Study: Canadian study was published by the American Association for Cancer Research in November 2001, which found that men exposed to glyphosate were developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under 10 years after exposure.
  • United States Study: Study was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which concluded that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”
  • Sweden Study: Swedish study published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008, which found that the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma would double in less than 10 years after exposure.

The IARC report had also found that four other pesticides may be carcinogenic and cautioned the public against using them. Even though these carcinogenic effects can be devastating to patients, the Monsanto Company allegedly failed to warn the public. Stephen states he would not have used Roundup if he had known the risk of mantle cell lymphoma.

This Mantle Cell Lymphoma lawsuit is Case No. 3:18-cv-00819-BJD-JRK, in the U.S. District Court of Middle District of Florida, Jacksonville Division.
