Lawsuit Alleges Samsung Needs to Come Clean About Premature Washer Drum RustA woman has filed a washer drum rust lawsuit against Samsung after her top-loading clothes washer allegedly began to rust prematurely.

Plaintiff Irma Barrera says she purchased a new Samsung washing machine in December 2013. She says she has had to stop using the washing machine because washer drum rust has damaged her clothing.

As a result, Irma alleges she has had to buy new clothes to replace the clothing ruined by the defective washing machine, and she has had to pay to go to a laundromat to wash her clothes. She claims she “has spent countless hours on the phone with Samsung attempting to have her defective washing machine repaired or replaced.”

Allegations of Washer Drum Rust Lawsuit

About a year after she purchased the washing machine, Irma claims she began to notice minor rusting of the washer drum. After she purportedly contacted Samsung several times, the company sent several technicians to examine the washer drum rust. Each technician reportedly told her the rust was “cosmetic” and would not affect the functioning of the washing machine.

Samsung also allegedly told Irma that the rust problem was not covered by any company warranty. Samsung representatives purportedly said they would not compensate Irma for the purchase price of the machine or compensate her for the cost of any damaged clothing as a result of the washer drum rust.

Irma’s lawsuit alleges that Samsung participated in deceptive and unfair trade practices by purportedly saying the washing machine’s “stainless steel drum is gentler on clothes and will not rust, chip, or damage clothing.”

The washer drum rust lawsuit alleges that Samsung used a coating on the washing machine drums that “does not have good chemical resistance and lacks anti-corrosive primer.”

As a result, the lawsuit alleges the coating is susceptible to penetration by bleach and detergent chemicals. Once the coating has been penetrated, water and oxygen follow through and create iron oxide, known as rust. Without a proper anti-corrosive primer, the drum becomes vulnerable to water seeping under the coating, and then can blister up the side of  the tank.

According to the washer drum rust lawsuit, Samsung has neglected to remedy the damage caused by premature rusting of its washing machines.

More than one consumer complained of rush occurring very early around the bleach dispenser. One customer said she had to put duct tape on the bleach dispenser to prevent it from falling into the washing machine drum.

Another consumer complained of washing a new pair of white jeans that were ruined because they became stained with reddish-brown marks from the washer drum rust.

The Washer Drum Rust Lawsuit is Irma Barrera v. Samsung Electronics America Inc, et. al., Case No. 30-2018-00968326-CU-FR-CXC in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Orange.
