9/11 cancer victims compensation fund New York skylineSeptember 11 cancer has become a prominent concern for the people of New York City, especially for those who lived or worked near Ground Zero. Different compensation funds were set up for victims of the 9/11 terror attacks and their loved ones who have had their lives permanently changed from September 11 cancer.

According to a report from the World Trade Center Health Program, 5,400 persons diagnosed with September 11 cancer have been enrolled in the program since the terrorist attacks in 2001, with more patients likely to be diagnosed in the future.

The number of September 11 cancer cases were consolidated and reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s World Trade Center Health Program on June 30, 2016.

According to the statistics released by the program, this represents triple the number of people enrolled who have September 11 cancer cases since January 2016, when only 1,822 registered.

Overview of September 11 Cancer

Over one million people were exposed to toxic substances from the 9/11 terrorist attacks and during the entire duration of the eight-month cleanup process. The toxic substances people were exposed to included aluminum, asbestos, glass, and burnt jet fuel. There have been over 70 different September 11 cancer variants identified in victims including:

  • Lung cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Non-melanoma Skin Cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Leukemia
  • Mesothelioma
  • Head, Neck, Nasal, Mouth Cancer
  • Colon Cancer
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Stomach Cancer
  • Esophagus Cancer
  • Bone Cancer
  • Liver Cancer
  • Brain Cancer
  • Sarcoma
  • Neuropathy Related to Cancer Treatment

The World Trade Center program noted that the number of September 11 cancer cases was steadily increasing by 1,525 per year between January 2013 through January 2016. However, experts point out that the actual number of September 11 cases is probably much higher because the statistics only reflected participants of the World Trade Center Health Program.

Participants of the program have been diagnosed with 6,378 cancer cases, with the program issuing certification if the person becomes eligible for the program.

All told, the World Trade Center Health Program currently consists of 75,000 members, including 12,000 patients who have been diagnosed with mental health problems as a result of the terrorist attacks.

The other 32,000 injury cases consist of patients suffering from different conditions including asthma, chronic cough, gastroesophageal reflux disorder, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The World Trade Center Health Registry is organized and run by the New York City Department of Health, who will most likely publish a report linking cancer development in conjunction with the 9/11 attacks.

Like other September 11 cancer funds, the World Trade Center Health Program provides medical care and treatment to victims who were directly impacted by the 2001 terrorist attacks.

There is a currently a $7.3 billion September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, set up to help people and their loved ones who were directly affected by the 2001 attack. Victims may be eligible for participation and could be eligible for compensation.

Navigating the complex and burdensome paperwork and strict deadlines to participate in the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund can be difficult. An experienced 9/11 Victim Fund attorney can help and ensure you get the maximum compensation available.
