An image of a pressure cooker used for canning homegrown fruits and vegetables. In the state of Texas, a woman has filed a lawsuit against the makers of her pressure cooker claiming that her extreme pressure cooker steam burns and liquid burns resulted from a faulty device.

Plaintiff Tabitha W. is suing Wolfgang Puck Worldwide, Inc. claiming that their brand of pressure cooker gave her pressure cooker steam burns. She claims that she bought a Wolfgang Puck 7 Quart 4-in-1 Pressure Cooker from the Home Shopping Network.

Tabitha says her Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker beeped at the end of its soup cycle, telling her that her gumbo was finished. According to the directions, she was supposed to unplug the device and vent the pressure cooker, allowing steam to escape. This reduces the pressure in the pressure cooker.

Tabitha alleges that about twenty minutes later, she opened the lid to the cooker. At this time, she alleges, gumbo exploded from the pressure cooker and Tabitha’s body was exposed to the boiling hot liquid from the pressure cooker. She claims that immediately on contact the juices from the gumbo burned her skin with second and third degree pressure cooker steam burns as well as burns from the liquid itself.

The scorching hot liquid was so intense that her oven door was shattered during the incident, she says. With the extreme pressure cooker steam burns and liquid burns, Tabitha was rushed to the hospital. There, she received treatment for burns on her chest, breasts, stomach, arm, leg and foot.

She is holding Wolfgang Puck Worldwide responsible for her injuries including pressure cooker steam burns and has filed this lawsuit on counts of negligence, gross negligence, breach of warranty, strict products liability and joint enterprises causes of action.

When this pressure cooker steam burns lawsuit went to trial, the defendant denied the allegations that Tabitha made and claimed that the plaintiff herself was responsible for her pressure cooker steam burns and liquid burns.

Wolfgang Puck Worldwide also filed a motion for summary judgment asking for the pressure cooker steam burns lawsuit to be dismissed because they were not actually involved in the manufacture or distribution of the appliance, they claim.

Pressure Cooker Steam Burns and Liquid Burns

A pressure cooker is a small kitchen appliance that is intended to cook food faster using extreme pressure, which raises the temperature of the food. In a pressure cooker, steam is trapped inside to increase pressure which raises the temperature.

Meals that would take hours to cook only take a little while with a pressure cooker. For example, a meal that may take between 4 and 8 hours to cook in a crockpot may only take 1 hour in a pressure cooker. This means that busy families can cook in a more efficient manner.

A pressure cooker is made up of a housing unit, the inner pot and the lid. Inside the inner pot is the meal ingredients. The housing unit contains the heating element and the lid is outfitted with a lock that forms an airtight seal. A pressure valve is also a feature for venting steam and releasing pressure.

When any part of this kitchen appliance malfunctions, there is a possibility of extreme and even life-threatening pressure cooker steam burns and liquid burns.

If you have been injured by a pressure cooker explosion, you may be able to seek legal remedies. While filing a pressure cooker steam burns lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering from a pressure cooker accident, monetary compensation may help alleviate medical costs and lost wages.
