Advil SJS is a concern to the patient population and medical community, as one of America’s most popular pain relievers may be linked to one of the most deadly drug reactions.
SJS (Stevens Johnson syndrome) is an extreme allergic reaction specifically caused by drug reactions, one that has been linked to over 100 different medications. Advil’s primary ingredient is ibuprofen, which has been linked to both SJS and its more extreme variant TEN (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
In May 2006, the FDA required the manufacturing company to update the drug’s label to include Advil SJS. Advil has been on the market since 1974 and is a part of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug family, which is used to reduce pain and fever by focusing on different hormones.
However potential Advil SJS makes the medication unique in its drug class, due to ibuprofen’s alleged linked to Stevens Johnson syndrome.
Overview of Advil SJS
Since Advil is an over the counter medication, it is important for patients to be wary of any symptoms of Advil SJS. Often SJS is characterized by red or purple skin lesions appearing all over the body, later peeling off and exposing internal tissue and muscle to potential infection.
These lesions can also spread through the patient’s mucous membranes that line the eyelids, mouth, throat, and tongue. This makes it very difficult for patients to breath and eat, with the allergic reaction also affecting the patient’s internal organs and can quickly turn fatal.
If not treated promptly, patients with Stevens Johnson syndrome can incur permanent skin and eyesight damage. Patients often have to get skin grafts due to replenish lost skin, and are also at risk for recurrence. With the severity of Stevens Johnson syndrome and how common Advil is used, patients should be aware of several warning signs of SJS.
Patients who develop Advil SJS typically start experiencing flu like symptoms within the first few weeks of starting the medication. The condition is more likely to occur when the patient combines different drugs. Due to the extreme rarity of Stevens Johnson syndrome, doctors may not initially recognize the symptoms so patients should mention any medications they started taking.
Patients who survive Stevens Johnson syndrome may be able to file legal action against manufacturers for failing to warn them against SJS. Potential claimants should contact a pharmaceutical product liability lawyer, to determine eligibility for a Stevens Johnson syndrome lawsuit.
