  • Where: The Tinder settlement was granted preliminary approval in California state court.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has preliminarily approved a $60.5 million settlement resolving claims that Tinder unlawfully charged users aged 30 and older more than younger subscribers, ending a decade-long litigation.

Judge Laura A. Seigle gave preliminary approval to an unopposed motion by lead plaintiff Allan Candelore in the Tinder class action.

The proposed Tinder settlement will benefit individuals who purchased Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold in California at any time on or after March 2, 2015, and who were over the age of 29 or at any time on or after March 2, 2016.

According to class counsel Kimberly Kralowec of Kralowec Law P.C., the Tinder settlement covers between 160% and 376% of the economic harm suffered by the class, depending on how the deal is calculated, as reported by Law360.

The class includes about 268,000 California Tinder users who allegedly overpaid roughly $16.144 million for Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold due to age-based pricing between March 2, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2025.

Tinder class action alleged pricing violated California law

The Tinder class action lawsuit, filed in 2015, alleged Tinder’s age-based pricing violated California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act and Unfair Competition Law.

After the suit was initially dismissed, that ruling was reversed on appeal, and the case was also stayed several times pending the outcome of a federal case with overlapping claims.

The Ninth Circuit twice rejected settlements in the federal case, most recently in 2023, ruling that the class representative had a conflict of interest and did not adequately represent the class before agreeing to the deal.

After the Ninth Circuit threw out the federal settlement in 2023, Tinder “became willing, for the first time, to engage in settlement discussions with class counsel,” according to Kralowec’s declaration to the court.
