Users of birth control Nexplanon may be unknowingly putting themselves at risk of developing a painful condition called pseudotumor cerebri. Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition that mimics the symptoms of a brain tumor without the presence of a tumor. Victims may choose to file a pseudotumor cerebri lawsuit if they experienced negative birth control side effects.
What is Pseudotumor Cerebri?
Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition that essentially means there is too much cerebrospinal fluid inside the skull. Cerebrospinal fluid is always being produced by the body, but it typically leaves the skull. When there is a problem with absorption, the pressure increases leading to intracranial hypertension and pseudotumor cerebri symptoms.
Pseudotumor cerebri symptoms may include severe headaches, migraines, problems or change in vision (such as blurred vision or light sensitivity), problems with balance and other complications. This brain tumor-like condition can cause permanent blindness as the pressure often builds around the optic nerves.
If left untreated, pseudotumor cerebri can lead to a series of vision and hearing problems in addition to the fact that the condition can cause extremely painful headaches. These false brain tumor side effects may cause anxiety to a patient who is unsure of what is happening to her body and is unaware that a condition such as pseudotumor cerebri even exists.
It is a treatable condition. Treatment options include a surgery that drains the fluid in the skull, thus reducing the pressure that has built up around the brain.
Nexplanon Pseudotumor Cerebri
Nexplanon is a birth control implant that works to prevent pregnancy for three years. It is implanted under the inner side of the upper arm. In general, Nexplanon headaches are a common side effect. In fact, 25 percent of women involved in the clinical trials experienced headaches as one of the birth control side effects.
It is likely that not all headaches were pseudotumor cerebri, but the condition has been suggested to be a possible birth control side effect. The National Institute of Health suggested that birth control could be a risk factor for the false brain tumor condition.
Users of Nexplanon or other birth control methods may chose to file birth control side effects lawsuits against the drug manufacturers who failed to warn against this painful side effect. If you experienced one of the following pseudotumor side effects, a birth control side effects lawsuit may be an effective way of receiving compensation for all medical costs, pain and suffering caused by the drug, as well as for failure to warn. Symptoms to be aware of include:
- Headaches
- Migraines
- Dizziness
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Changes in vision
- Ringing or “whooshing” in the ears
- Problems Walking
- Neck stiffness
- Forgetfulness
- Depression
Many varieties of birth control pills and IUDs are currently under investigation for a possible link to pseudotumor cerebri.
