Sexual Enhancement Supplements Criticized by FDA and FTC
By Amanda Antell
U.S. Food & Drug Administration researchers announced that “dietary supplements” advertised to treat sexual performance problems could possibly contain prescription drugs or other undisclosed ingredients that could be potentially harmful.
Many U.S. consumers perceive these products as safe because they are often sold with the popular “all-natural alternatives” label, implying they are alternatives to prescription drugs that have been approved by the FDA. However, it has been recently discovered that some of these products may have been laced with dangerous ingredients that are not mentioned on the supplements’ labels.
The FDA states that due to the hazardous components in these supplements, these products may interact in dangerously with medications that the patients may be taking. While sexual enhancement supplements have been around since the 1800s, sales for these products started to rise after the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act passed in 1994. This act allowed supplement manufacturers to market products without the FDA’s approval. For years, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been attempting to correct the labeling on these products, which have been found to exaggerate the supplements’ efficiency and often fail to include an accurate list of ingredients.
The FTC is responsible for preventing fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices, and is charged with educating consumers to avoid them. The FTC works closely with the FDA to help consumers avoid fraudulent sexual enhancement products. Specifically, the agencies recommend consumers be cautious of the following marketing tactics:
- Supplements advertised for treating impotence without a physician’s prescription
- Products advertised as “breakthrough” supplements
- “Clinics” or “institutes” that are run by the supplement manufacturers to promote their sexual enhancement supplements
- Sexual enhancement products advertised as “scientifically proven” to work
- Impotence cures that are said to be “herbal” or “all natural”
If you are concerned or confused about the sexual enhancement supplement you are taking, you should immediately consult your physician.
Overview of Sexual Enhancement Drug Allegations
At this time, there are hundreds of sexual enhancement products marketed to men and women in the United States. These products promise to improve the patients’ sexual performance and intensity of their orgasms. These products have become a multi-billion dollar industry, marketing a variety of treatments for different libido conditions.
Since 2004, the FDA has identified 17 products sold online as dietary or sexual enhancement supplements for treating erectile dysfunction and enhancing sexual performance which may contain harmful, undeclared ingredients. The FDA has identified the following products as having these potentially dangerous ingredients:
