Disco text class action lawsuit settlementNumerous Top Class Actions readers are reporting they got huge surprise in their mailbox Friday – a check worth over $400 for a text spam class action lawsuit we’ve been reporting on since 2011.

The checks are part of a $6 million class action settlement between Google Inc. and consumers who were bombarded with text messages from Disco.com – a group texting platform developed by Google subsidiary Slide Inc. The settlement resolved allegations that Google Slide violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) by sending unsolicited text messages to consumes, sometimes dozens in a single day.

Class action settlements sometimes get a bad rap for offering small payouts to consumers. But what many critics don’t realize is that class actions are designed to help hundreds – sometimes hundreds of thousands – of consumers go up against a huge company like Google without having to shell out attorneys’ fees or spending hours in a courtroom. Sometimes the payouts are small – average class action settlements reported on by Top Class Actions are between $10 and $50. Sometimes, though, TCA connects consumers to class action settlements that can be worth hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars.
