Angie's List Class Action Lawsuit

A proposed $1.4 million settlement has been reached with Angie’s List Inc. in connection with three putative class action lawsuits focusing on Angie’s List acceptance of advertising payments from service providers, and whether those payments affect service provider’s letter-grade ratings, reviews and place in search-result rankings.

Angie’s List is a subscription-based review service which allows consumers to share reviews and ratings of local service providers, such as contractors, dentists, and mechanics.

Members can then search the reviews and ratings via the Angie’s List website.

However, several members contend that Angie’s List falsely assures consumers that a service provider’s position in a member’s search results “is determined by their recent grade and number of reviews. Companies with the best ratings from members will appear first.”

This prompted lead plaintiffs Janell Moore, Gary Glick and Michelle Zygelman to initiate three separate class action lawsuits against Angie’s List similarly claiming that the company unfairly and deceptively lures consumers into paying for access to allegedly unfiltered, “passive,” consumer-driven search results and rankings of local service providers, and related content.

Specifically, the plaintiffs allege that Angie’s List manipulates “the List” for the company’s own economic gain, all without the consumer’s knowledge.

The class action lawsuits also claim that Angie’s List misstates that “businesses do not pay” to be on Angie’s List when eligible businesses can pay to advertise promotions and discounts through Angie’s List.

Angie’s List denies the claims and allegations made in the class actions. Angie’s List is settling to avoid the expense, inconvenience, risk, and disruption of litigation.

Class Members who want to object or exclude themselves from the Angie’s List settlement must do so by Oct. 24, 2016.

I never got claim form from claim administrator.

  2. Connie says:

As a A rated Service Provider for many years our company has paid nearly $60,000 to Angie’s list to be able to be viewed by consumers looking for a service provider. We believe this is deceptive to the consumer base.

Additionally, Angie’s List used their “complaint resolution process” as a means to allow customers to use the “give me my money back or I will post an F reivew”. As a company with over 300 A rated reviews we have walked away from clients who used Angie’s list for this practice. Recently, we received a complaint from one of these client’s as we were no longer were going to allow a client to use this practice for free services. Angie’s list left a message on our machine stating that if we give the client their money back, they would remove the review. They refused to post our response. We did not ask to have the review removed. We wanted to post our response. Angie’s list would not post our response unless we provided authorization to use this complaint, in part or complete in a future publication. We were not in favor of this, because of the circumstances involved. We stated in an email, and verbally, that we did not authorize publication, and that we wanted to have this complaint handled fairly. Our response was posted weeks later. Then they posted the customer reply to our response in italics, of which placed our good company in poor standing with the community members.

Angie’s list sells spots to business owners so that they can be seen by end users in their area. Spots are sold according to key words, and categories, and zip codes. If you do not by into these contracts, you will not be seen easily by members who live in your area. We have reluctantly purchased these contracts in order to be found by end users in our service area.

As stated before, we feel as a business owner, Angie’s List does not provide free and fair practices that would allow 1. fair visibility to end users, requiring business owners to purchase contracts providing business owners with visibility local to their business, and 2. Angie’s list complaint process allows and supports end users to utililze the “give me my money back or I will post an F review”, and does not allow service providers ability to post response that provides a fair and equal process for both parties.

Furthermore, Angie’s list has instituted a new contact for business to sign prior to gaining access to their reviews and account which is one sided.

  3. Jan says:

Received confirmation code for a valid claim filed in October 2016 but haven’t received payment as of July 2017, although this site reports checks were mailed at the end of May 2017. Tried to report this to the Settlement Administrator but their website is no longer secure and their phone number just plays an old recording.

    1. Destiny says:

Same is the case with me, check expired and website no longer works.
