Aveda class action settlement

The Aveda cosmetology school class action lawsuit was filed by plaintiff Sophia Krivy, who says she was charged $12 for a haircut at a Jean Madeline Aveda Institute salon in Philadelphia.

Krivy claims that this $12 charge for a haircut violates Pennsylvania state law, which states: “No school of cosmetology shall, directly or indirectly, charge any money whatsoever for treatment by its students and shall only charge the reasonable cost of materials used in such treatment.”

According to the Aveda class action lawsuit, the cost of materials needed to perform her haircut was estimated to be about $2.

Aveda was not found liable for any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $1.35 million to settle the class action lawsuit and avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation. Under the terms of the settlement, Aveda agreed to offer Class Members a cash payment of $25 or a total of $50 in vouchers.

Class Members of the Aveda settlement include anyone who paid for a service at a student-operated Jean Madeline Aveda Institute salon in Philadelphia between Feb. 24, 2008 and Feb. 16, 2016.

The deadline to file a claim for the Aveda cosmetology school class action settlement passed on June 6, 2016.
