Jean Madeline Aveda Institute settlement

A cosmetology school associated with Aveda agreed to settle a class action lawsuit stemming over allegations that it overcharged customers for services in violation of state law.

Lead plaintiff Sophia Krivy filed the class action lawsuit after claiming to be charged $12 for a hair cut at The Jean Madeline Aveda Institute in Philadelphia.

According to Pennsylvania state law, “No school of cosmetology shall, directly or indirectly, charge any money whatsoever for treatment by its students and shall only charge the reasonable cost of materials used in such treatment.”

Krivy alleges that $12 for a haircut is much higher than the cost of materials needed to perform such task, which she estimates to be closer to $2.

Under the cosmetology settlement, JMEC agreed to create a Settlement Fund of $1.35 million in cash and service vouchers to compensate eligible Class Members.

JMEC runs a cosmetology school and operates three student beauty salons in Philadelphia. At these salons, customers pay for various treatments by unlicensed students and pay the service fees directly to JMEC.

Customers wishing to object or be excluded from the settlement must submit their request by Apr. 7, 2016.

All of you people are a joke to society! I attended Aveda (graduated in 2015) and it is worth every penny you pay at the school for any of the services you receive. AGAIN….you are having your hair cut AT A SCHOOL FOR $12 — I MEAN REALLY. Go to a regular salon — an Aveda salon — and see how much you pay for a haircut and then complain and file these frivolous lawsuits. My haircuts start at $60 and color starts at $200….and you get that and then some during your service.

I received my check (in PA). The check did not clear! Did anyone else have this issue?
