Good news for those of you who missed the deadline to claim a free replacement power adapter from the Apple MacBook Adapter class action lawsuit settlement: the deadline to request a new power adapter has been extended to July 31, 2013.
The MacBook Power Adapter settlement resolves a class action lawsuit, entitled In Re: MagSafe Apple Power Adapter Litigation, that claimed MacBook power adapters are defective, forcing consumers to buy new ones prematurely. This alleged defect causes MacBook adapters to “dangerously fray, spark and prematurely fail to work.” Apple denies all allegations, but agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement in 2011 to resolve the litigation.
If you have an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro MagSafe adapter that shows signs of Strain Relief Damage (e.g.; fraying, melting, straining, sparking, weakening, discoloration, bubbling, overheating and/or separation of the Adapter’s strain reliefs) now or in the future, you can claim a free replacement under Apple’s Adapter Replacement Program by taking your adapter and computer to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider or contacting AppleCare.
The deadline to claim your replacement MagSafe adapter from the class action settlement is July 31, 2013. More information on the Apple MacBook Power Adapter Class Action Settlement can be found at www.AdapterSettlement.com. Click on “Supplemental Notice of Date Extension” for details on how to get your power cord swapped out by Apple.
UPDATE: Apple’s class action settlement for defective MagSafe power adapters was vacated by a Ninth Circuit panel April 24, saying that the $3 million in attorney’s fees had not been vetted thoroughly by the lower court.

Disappointed since I am experiencing a similar issue with the newer style adapter (not the T, but the right-angle connector), and of course this is not covered in the class action lawsuit and replacement program. It’s apparent that they did not really fix the issue with the new design, since the rubbery part has peeled away from the metal shield under normal use.
