Did you take Tylenol or acetaminophen products while pregnant, and was your child later diagnosed with autism, ADHD or a related disorder? You may be eligible to seek compensation.

Using acetaminophen and Tylenol during pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other related disorders in children. It is being alleged in hundreds of Tylenol lawsuits that drug manufacturers failed to warn women that taking the pain reliever during pregnancy posed a health risk to their children.

Does Tylenol cause autism, ADHD and other side effects?

A growing body of research suggests that using acetaminophen products like Tylenol during pregnancy could increase the risk of autism and ADHD in children.

Some of the research findings show:

  • Newborns with high levels of acetaminophen in their bloodstream were nearly three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD or autism spectrum disorder as children.
  • Fetal exposure to this medication may impact brain development, specifically in areas involved in emotional and cognitive processing.
  • Of 996 babies observed in a study about prenatal acetaminophen exposure, nearly 26% were diagnosed with ADHD around the age of 8.9 years.

Many study authors support the conclusion that further research and awareness is needed.

Ongoing Tylenol autism, ADHD lawsuits

Over 440 Tylenol autism lawsuits have been filed and consolidated in federal court in a multi-district litigation against the makers of Tylenol and generic acetaminophen products. Plaintiffs allege that drugmakers failed to warn women that taking acetaminophen during pregnancy posed a health risk for their children.

The drug makers have pushed back against these allegations, saying there is no evidence to support claims that autism and ADHD are caused by fetal acetaminophen exposure, and that they are genetic disorders.

What type of developmental disorders are included in the Tylenol autism lawsuits?

The following disorders may be linked to Tylenol use during pregnancy:

  • Autism/Autism Spectrum Disorder affects the brain and nervous system, causing difficulties in communication, social interaction, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behavior.
  • Asperger’s Syndrome affects social behavior but is associated with normal or above-average intelligence and language skills.
  • Kanner’s Syndrome includes a dependence on an unvarying routine and no interest in surroundings, including people.
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder presents around the age of 3, when children rapidly lose language, motor, social and other skills already learned.
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder is characterized by delays in the development of social and communication skills.
  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is characterized by an inability to focus, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

If your child was diagnosed with one of these disorders and you took Tylenol or another acetaminophen product while pregnant with them, you may have a legal claim against the manufacturers of these products.
