How child predators exploit Discord’s chat features

Some online predators exploit popular platforms like Roblox and Discord to target young children and teens. Their tactics often follow a disturbing pattern:

Initial contact: Predators typically begin on Roblox or another platform geared toward younger audiences. Using built-in social features, they befriend children and work to establish trust.

Moving the conversation to a less-secure platform: Once trust is established, predators often try to move the conversation to Discord or another messaging app. These platforms have fewer moderators and allow the exchange of images, videos, and private voice or video calls — giving predators more direct access to their victims.

Escalating abuse: After moving to Discord, predators may increase their inappropriate behavior, sharing explicit content and requesting it in return. This can include threats or bribes to coerce children into sending images or videos.

Luring the child to meet: In some cases, predators attempt to take the abuse offline by persuading children or teens to meet in person, where abduction, physical violence, or sexual assault may occur.

Why are families filing lawsuits against Discord?

Discord’s terms of service acknowledge the risks of human trafficking and child exploitation, outlining policies to combat these issues. However, families and advocates argue that these measures have done little to stop the grooming and sexual abuse of minors on the platform.

Multiple reports describe children and teens meeting online predators through Discord chatrooms or after connecting on other platforms like Roblox.

Now, several lawsuits against Discord allege that the company failed to implement adequate safeguards to prevent such abuse. These legal actions are seeking compensation for the harm caused to minor children and accountability for Discord’s alleged negligence.
