What is Depo Provera?
Depo Provera is a well-known brand of medroxyprogesterone acetate. It is a progestin-based contraceptive that is administered via intramuscular injection every three months. This birth control shot does not contain any estrogen. Instead, it contains progestogens, which act similarly to natural progesterone. Since it does not contain any estrogen, it is a viable birth control option for breastfeeding mothers, as well as individuals with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease.
Depo Provera functions primarily by suppressing ovulation. Additionally, it thickens cervical mucus, creating a barrier that impedes the passage of sperm through the cervix and into the upper reproductive tract.
In addition to acting as a contraceptive, Depo Provera is used to manage specific medical conditions, such as endometriosis and irregular periods. Around the world, approximately 74 million women use the birth control shot.
What kind of brain tumor does Depo Provera allegedly cause?
In a recent study conducted by researchers at France’s National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety, scientists found that patients who utilize progestin-based medications for a prolonged period of time may face an elevated risk of developing intracranial meningiomas. Specifically, the study found that Depo Provera users were 5.6 times more likely to develop a meningioma compared to non-users.
In most cases, intracranial meningiomas are benign tumors. However, they can still cause lasting health issues and neurological damage. As an intracranial meningioma grows, it exerts pressure on brain tissue, nerves and blood vessels in the surrounding area. This may ultimately result in disability for the patient, and if left untreated, it may become life-threatening. While meningiomas are typically slow-growing and non-cancerous, immediate medical intervention is often recommended to prevent compression of vital anatomical structures and the overall decline of the patient that can ensue.
