Are you a current or former AT&T customer? You may soon receive a letter or email advising you that your personal information was stolen in a data breach and appeared on the dark web.

AT&T reports it has experienced yet another data breach, and it is huge. Some 70 million current and former customersโ€™ private information has been posted on the dark web.

The dark web contains hidden sites accessible only with a particular browser known as The Onion Router (Tor). It is often used to commit crimes such as identity theft, arms trafficking, drug dealing and child pornography, and to share photos of violence and abuse.

If your personal identifiers were compromised, AT&T says, you will receive a letter or email with specific information about what the criminals learned about you.

Do you qualify?

If you receive a letter or email from AT&T reporting that your personal information was compromised in a data breach, you may be eligible to join a class action lawsuit investigation seeking compensation and damages, free credit report monitoring and other safeguards.

Please fill out the form on this page for more information.

What happened?

The breach was discovered in mid-March 2024.

โ€œTo the best of our knowledge, the compromised data appears to be from 2019 or earlier and does not contain personal financial information or call history,โ€ AT&T states.

Compromised information may have included customersโ€™ full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, Social Security number and date of birth, as well as their AT&T account number and passcode.

In a press release, the company says it is unaware of any resulting damage so far. But stay alert.

What should I do?

You should now take several steps to protect your accounts.

AT&T has reset passcodes. To sign in to your current account:

  1. Navigate to myAT&T.
  2. Enter your ID and password. (These are separate from your passcode and have not changed.)
  3. On the Confirm Your Security Passcode page, select โ€œForgot passcode?โ€
  4. Follow the prompts to enter and submit a new security passcode.

You should also:

  • Request and review your free credit reports at Freecreditreport.com
  • Set up free fraud alerts from the three nationwide credit bureaus โ€” EquifaxExperian and TransUnion
  • Change as many passwords as you can
  • Stay alert for changes in your bank and other accounts
  • You may want to freeze your credit and debit cards
  • You may want to seek legal counsel to help you join a class action lawsuit that will bring the matter to the attention of the court and could help you recover proper and full compensation.

What is AT&T doing?

Several days after the data breach was announced, reporters from NPR reached out to AT&T stores and discovered the news had not yet reached them.

However, the company says it has begun to send out letters and emails to affected customers and former customers and is โ€œworking with external cybersecurity experts to analyze the situation.โ€

Take the time now to protect yourself from future identity theft.
