AI spam calls: Who’s affected?

You may be eligible to take legal action against AI-driven telemarketing calls if you have received persistent calls from various companies. Fill out the form on this page to learn more.
As telemarketing continues to play an important role in business operations, companies are increasingly leveraging technology to enhance various aspects of the process. In addition to utilizing auto dialing to efficiently contact large volumes of consumers, many organizations are now implementing AI voice technology to engage with individuals directly.
An AI voice call is different from a pre-recorded robocall. AI-generated robocalls sound like you are talking to a real person because the AI voice can respond to questions and engage in a relatively natural-sounding conversation. Clues that you may be speaking with an AI-generated voice include unnatural pauses or speech patterns.
As the telemarketing industry incorporates these new forms of technology, it is essential to understand consumer rights for AI telemarketing call harassment.

Are AI-generated robocalls legal in the U.S.?
In February 2024, the FCC ruled that robocalls utilizing an AI-generated voice are illegal.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement, “Bad actors are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters. We’re putting the fraudsters behind these robocalls on notice.”
This decision means that companies that continue using AI-generated voice to spam consumers may face fines from the FCC. Additionally, individuals who receive recurring AI calls are legally empowered to take action against the companies.
How to stop AI spam robocalls
With the dramatic increase in robocalls, knowing how to protect against AI spam calls is important. You can take several steps to reduce or eliminate unwanted telemarketing calls.
- Use call blocking tools – several major telecommunication providers offer call filtering services to identify and block suspected spam calls. You can also use mobile apps to screen incoming calls and text messages. These solutions can easily be installed and activated on your phone.
- Silence calls from unknown numbers – iPhone and Android devices have settings to mute or reject calls from numbers that have not been saved to the contact list.
- Register with do-not-call lists – Signing up with the national do-not-call registry is an effective way to decrease unwanted telemarketing robocalls. Registration takes only a few minutes and can be completed through DoNotCall.gov.
- Pursue legal actions when companies overstep – As a consumer, you have a right to determine how and when you are contacted. When opt-out requests are not properly respected, you have the right to pursue legal recourse.
