What is Roundup? A glyphosate overview

Roundup is a widely-used weed killer that uses glyphosate as its active ingredient to target unwanted plants while leaving crops and other vegetation largely unaffected. Although it is sold in home-use formulas, most glyphosate products are used in large-scale agriculture and professional landscaping.

Originally developed by Monsanto, Roundup became one of the most widely used herbicides in the world before Bayer acquired the company in 2018.

Is glyphosate safe? Experts disagree

Although glyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the U.S., its safety is still widely debated.

In 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that glyphosate posed “no risks of concern to human health” when used as directed. However, not all health agencies agree.

Back in 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” after reviewing over 1,000 studies. The agency found strong evidence that glyphosate and products like Roundup could cause genetic damage.

While regulatory agencies continue to debate the risks, people who’ve worked with Roundup — including farmers, landscapers, and home gardeners — are still being diagnosed with cancers linked to glyphosate exposure.

Roundup verdicts for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancer patients

Since 2018, thousands of individuals and families have taken legal action against Monsanto and Bayer, claiming that exposure to Roundup caused life-altering cancer diagnoses — including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, T-cell leukemia and others.

Many of these Roundup cancer lawsuits have led to substantial jury verdicts and settlements, helping victims cover medical bills, lost wages and long-term care.

  • The first major Roundup cancer lawsuit was filed in 2018. A California groundskeeper who developed terminal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was awarded $289 million by a jury. The award was later reduced to $78 million after an appeal.
  • In 2019, a jury awarded a California couple more than $2 billion after both developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma following years of Roundup use. That award was reduced to $86.7 million.
  • That same year, another plaintiff received an $80 million verdict, which was later reduced to $25 million.
