The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will pay $80 million as part of a settlement to resolve claims it violated Illinois law by making retirees pay health insurance premiums.

The settlement benefits Chicago Transit Authority retirees; 6,354 individuals are included under this class definition.

According to the class action lawsuit, the CTA wrongfully charged retirees for monthly healthcare premiums. These premiums were allegedly deducted from monthly pension checks to some retirees.

The Chicago Transit Authority operates Chicago’s trains and buses.

The CTA hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $80 million settlement to resolve the retirement class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the CTA retirement settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they paid in premiums between July 1, 2009, and March 31, 2023.

No payment estimates are available, but class members could recover thousands of dollars.

The objection deadline is Sept. 25, 2023. There is no exclusion deadline for this settlement.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for Oct. 23, 2023.

No claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. Class members will automatically receive a check at their address on file.

However, if class members wish to change their address, they can submit a change-of-address form by Sept. 25, 2023. If the class member is deceased, their next of kin can submit a proof of kinship form by Sept. 25, 2023, to receive their share of the settlement. Both of these forms must be notarized.
