An Iowa federal judge certified a class action lawsuit brought against the Iowa Barnstormers youth basketball program, former coach Greg Stephen, team sponsor Adidas, and tournament organizer Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) surrounding the alleged misconduct and abuse by Stephen while a Barnstormers coach.
US District Court Judge John Jarvey certified a class of all Iowa Barnstormers participants between 2005 and 2018 who were allegedly victimized by Stephen. This does not include participants of the Iowa Mavericks, another youth basketball club, which was a part of Stephen’s 2019 criminal case.
“The order of the court is good news for the more than 400 victims of the despicable conduct of Gregory Stephen and the failures of Barnstormer Basketball,” a lawyer representing the plaintiffs told the Des Moines Register.
The class action lawsuit was filed by an unnamed former Barnstormers player. The complaint accuses the organizations of negligence in hiring and supervising Stephen, as well as maintaining inadequate policies to protect young athletes. While a Barnstormers coach, Stephen, collected explicit images and videos of more than 400 boys and physically molested more than a dozen.
