Syracuse University Gender Wage Gap Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Syracuse University and its female faculty members.
  • Why: Syracuse University has agreed to pay more than $3.7 million to settle claims of compensation discrimination brought by its female-identifiying faculty members.
  • Where: New York

Syracuse University has agreed to pay more than $3.7 million to settle claims brought by female-identifying faculty members that its male professors were paid more.

On Oct. 1, Syracuse and lawyers for the plaintiffs published a joint statement announcing the university had agreed to pay $3,713,000 to settle claims the university’s compensation and promotion policies and practices had an adverse impact on its female professors.

“The University has been and remains committed to pay equity. A 2017 evaluation of full-time faculty salaries resulted in salary adjustments for over 150 female faculty members totaling nearly $2 million,” the college added.

The original complaint was filed by five female professors at Syracuse who claimed that, although the university studied pay equity and made salary adjustments in prior years, those adjustments were inadequate because they were prospective in nature.

The $3.7 million settlement will benefit female-identifying faculty members who have worked full-time at the college for at least one year since Jan. 8, 2014 to the date the complaint was filed.

Eligible faculty will receive approximately two-thirds of the overall settlement, minus administration fees, with the settlement distributed depending on tenure. The law firm Outten & Golden will get the rest.

“We are pleased that Syracuse has agreed to resolve the claims, and the settlement will provide meaningful relief to our clients and other female faculty,” Outten & Golden attorney Deirdre Aaron said.

Syracuse University Senior Vice President for Academic Operations Steve Bennett said the college was committed to providing an equitable and supportive work environment moving forward.

“We continue to work closely with academic leadership to ensure salaries are commensurate with every faculty member’s job responsibilities, efforts and accomplishments, regardless of gender.”

Meanwhile, four former Google employees are suing the tech giant over claims of gender discrimination, seeking to represent thousands of women.

The plaintiffs say they have evidence proving more than 10,800 women suffered damage from what they allege was Google’s practice of funneling female employees to lower paying jobs and underpaying them.
