Northwestern University class action overview:

  • Who: Three anonymous plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against Northwestern University.
  • Why: Northwestern University allowed anti-Israel demonstrators to set up encampments on the school’s Deering Meadow and make antisemitic statements, the lawsuit claims.
  • Where: The Northwestern University class action was filed in Cook County court in Illinois.

A group of anonymous Northwestern University students filed a class action lawsuit against the school claiming it encouraged anti-war demonstrators and failed to provide a safe atmosphere for all students.

The school decided to “facilitate, encourage and coddle a dystopic cesspool of hate” at Deering Meadow in the center of campus while allowing an encampment for the Northwestern University demonstrators, the lawsuit claims.

The demonstrators chanted hateful phrases such as the genocidal “from the river to the sea” while acknowledging Jewish students feel unsafe on campus, according to a video statement from Northwestern President Michael Schill, who is Jewish.

“When I see a Star of David with an ‘X’ on it, when I see a picture of me with horns or when I hear that one of our students has been called a ‘dirty Jew’ there is no ambiguity,” Schill says. “This needs to be condemned.”

Northwestern not following own rules by allowing encampment, class action says

The plaintiffs include one identified as Jane Doe and two John Does who claim the school is not following its own rules by allowing the unapproved encampment.

“Northwestern twisted itself into a pretzel to accommodate the hostile and discriminatory encampment, legislate around it and ultimately reward it,” the lawsuit claims.

Northwestern can’t choose to stop enforcing its rules to allow the encampment or any group of students or student organizations to pitch tents and sleep on the campus lawn without approval, the lawsuit says.

In other news, Northwestern University operates a website that is not fully accessible to and independently usable by blind or visually impaired individuals, according to a class action lawsuit filed in May 2023 in New York federal court.

The Northwestern University class action lawsuit is Jane Doe, et al. v. Northwestern University, Case No. 2024CH04027, in the Circuit Court for Cook County, Illinois, Chancery Division.
