Pay disparity class action lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Employees filed pay disparity complaints against SpaceX, Disney and Vassar College.
  • Why: The lawsuits involve a pay gap in the workforce based on a worker’s gender and/or minority status.
  • Where: The lawsuits were filed in California and New York courts.

Employees filed a trio of lawsuits regarding pay disparities among women and minorities in the workplace.

The work pay gap complaints involve SpaceX, Disney and Vassar College.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also reached a $6 million class action settlement in September that will provide compensation to 85 Black and Hispanic individuals whom the agency argues were discriminated and retaliated against in the workplace.

SpaceX pays, promotes, women, minority workers less, class action says

A former female employee filed a lawsuit against SpaceX earlier this month, arguing the astronautics company pays women and minorities less and promotes women at lower rates than their male counterparts

The former worker argues she was paid the lowest amount possible for her position and was only given that amount because the law required the company to post the salary range on a job opening.

“Given the now public pay band, Defendants were forced to give her a raise–but still only paid her $95,000, the lowest tier of the salary band,” the SpaceX lawsuit states.

The plaintiff claims SpaceX violates California’s Equal Pay Act, which bars a company from paying an employee less than the opposite sex when their job is substantially similar, according to the SpaceX lawsuit.

Vassar College discriminates against female professors, class action claims

Five current and former female professors filed a class action lawsuit against Vassar College in late August, arguing the school discriminates against female professors by paying them less than their male counterparts.

The group argues the school “systematically underpays, underpromotes and unfairly evaluates its female full professors” in an alleged violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and a pair of New York laws.

The lawsuit claims Vassar College offers male professors a higher starting salary than its female professors, with the alleged pay disparity affecting them throughout their career since any pay increases are based on a percentage of their salary.

The group of female professors argue the educational institution has known about the wage gap for a long time yet fails to take steps to correct it.

Current, former female Disney workers ask judge to certify underpayment class action

A group of current and former female employees filed a class action lawsuit against The Walt Disney Co. in 2019, arguing the company underpays its female employees and passes them over for promotions.

The plaintiffs filed a motion earlier this year asking the federal judge overseeing the case to grant them class certification.

The group claims female employees working in middle management for Disney are paid at least $150 million less in total than men working in substantially similar positions.

They also accuse Disney of piling extra work onto its female workers without offering them additional compensation and failing to “supply sufficient support staff to allow women to succeed at their jobs.”

Gender pay gap at record low, according to BLS data

In related news, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released data last month showing the pay gap between men and women in the workforce reached its lowest point ever recorded.

Women in the workforce now make about 84% of the median income of their male counterparts, the lowest disparity recorded since the United States began collecting gender pay gap data in 1979, according to data analyzed by Axios.

The gap between men and women in the workforce in general has also decreased to a record low of 10.5%, according to the data, which revealed 68.2% of men and 57.7% of women are currently in the workforce.

    that’s against the law
you should be able to see a magistrate in 24 hours
I tried to do some thing about this myself, but the judge just wanted me to talk to the sheriff
that’s who arrested me, they also took away all of my meds. They also did not take me to the hospital and I ended up having a broken Hyroid bone from my boyfriend choking me, but ultimately, they did nothing to him, and I was the one arrested. kept me confined for four days. I had just been diagnosed with melanoma and did not take me to a doctor for a broken bone in my neck.
