What Oil Is Added to CBD?
CBD is cannabidiol, a substance extracted from the hemp or marijuana plant. Either coconut oil or hemp seed oil is added to act as a delivery system.
Is CBD the Same Thing as THC?
No. Both CBD and THC are cannabinoids found in marijuana plants, but they are very different. THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient responsible for the “high” experienced by people who smoke or ingest marijuana. THC is known to increase anxiety in some users, and may lead to addictive behavior and cravings.
CBD is cannabidiol, which is not believed to contain any psychoactive properties, but a New York Times article noted the jury is still out on that. CBD research indicates the substance may reduce anxiety and help control addictive tendencies.
What Is Epidiolex?
Epidiolex is the first FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug made with CBD extract. The medication is prescribed to help control rare seizures in patients. Other cannabidiol medications might be on the market eventually, but more research is needed.
Can CBD Help People Suffering from Anxiety?
According to the New York Times, studies show conflicting results. One study published in the medical journal Neuropsychopharmacology determined patients had reduced social anxiety after taking CBD oil to calm them prior to a public speaking assignment.
In another study from the University of Chicago’s department of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience, patients who took CBD exhibited no changes in their emotional responses to certain images or words when compared with a group that had not used CBD.
Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized some research of CBD, the FDA has not had regulatory control over the extract. A bipartisan bill is currently being considered that would mandate FDA-approval of CBD products.
Are There Any Studies of CBD Products and Possible Benefits for Those Struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
Yes, the Department of Veterans Affairs is conducting a randomized control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of CBD as an additional treatment in soldiers suffering from PTSD. The randomized, controlled, double-blind research endeavor will compare 136 male and female Veterans who receive prolonged exposure (PE) therapy and CBD with those who receive PE therapy and a placebo, or fake pill. The study is estimated to be completed in September 2023.
What If I Bought a Product with CBD Oil, But Saw No Benefits?
Unfortunately, some unscrupulous businesses have taken advantage of CBD’s popularity by advertising CBD-based supplements that contain little or no CBD. Among the companies suspected of selling CBD merchandise with unsatisfactory amounts of the active ingredient are Eco Sciences, Experience CBD Gummies, and Freedom Wellness.
How Could CBD Potentially Reduce Pain?
According to Healthline, the human body has its own endocannabinoid system that helps control sleep, appetite, pain and inflammation.
“The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters thand bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system,” says Healthline.
Early study results indicate CBD may reduce chronic pain by interfering with endocannabinoid receptors and reducing inflammation.
