In recent years, cannabidiol, also known as CBD, has become one of the most sought after supplements on the market. However, given its rather sudden explosion onto the market since being removed from the U.S. list of Schedule I controlled substances, regulating these products and what they contain has been a consistent cause of concern for consumers. According to The Fashion Law, the Food and Drug Administration, the agency most likely to be charged with regulating the product, has “many unanswered questions about the science, safety, and quality of many of these [CBD] products”.
Lord Jones has been a leading pioneer in the CBD market since its inception in 2015, especially regarding beauty and skincare products. Lord Jones High CBD Formula Body Lotion and other Lord Jones products were the first CBD-based items available at beauty giant Sephora and their products have been widely popular among celebrities like Chelsea Handler and Olivia Wilde, according to the Huffington Post.
What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is a non-psychoactive component of marijuana. According to Lord Jones’ site, CBD is extracted from hemp using a few different methods that each produces a different product. These extracts are known as “hemp” oil and can be up to 100 percent pure CBD. Lord Jones uses “broad spectrum” CBD extracts which are about 80-90 percent CBD with the remaining portion made up of the plants’ terpenes, or flavor components, and phytocannabinoids, other types of cannabidiol. According to Lord Jones, all of their products are made with this broad-spectrum CBD.
What Do the Lord Jones Product Labels State?
The lack of regulation and consistent guidelines for the labeling of CBD products has led to confusion among manufacturers and consumers alike. Avery, a label producer, published a blog regarding the best practices for CBD product labeling. The blog explains that the labeling requirements for these products are largely determined by the state they’re sold in. Lord Jones’ products, however, are sold in the majority of U.S. states, according to the company’s store locator.
Avery states that CBD producers like Lord Jones should list seven different specifications on their CBD labels. The first six are basic labeling components like the brand name and warning statement, but the “disclosure of material facts”, as Avery calls it, is more complex. This information should include whether the product is broad- or full-spectrum or an isolate. These terms do not automatically let consumers know the actual CBD content of the product. It is unclear whether or not Lord Jones’ printed labels disclose the amount of CBD in their products, but the information is available in their online store. Each 50 ml tube of Stiletto Cream, for instance, contains 200 mg of CBD.
How Much CBD Do Lord Jones’ Products Have?
Again, this number varies from product to product. Some products can have as much as 1,000 milligrams of CBD while others contain 100 mg or less. According to the Huffington Post, some of Lord Jones’ products are among the highest concentrations of CBD on the market, assuming their labeling is accurate. For instance, Lord Jones Royal Oil retails for $100 per one-ounce bottle. The tiny bottle is labeled as containing 1,000 mg of broad-spectrum CBD. The product itself is made up of two ingredients: CBD oil (hemp oil), and grapeseed oil. Lord Jones claims the grapeseed oil functions as a carrier for the CBD and itself is rich in omega 6 and vitamin E.
Have Lord Jones Products Been Falsely Labeled?
As of yet, there is no proof to suggest that Lord Jones has been falsely labeling their products. However, false labeling is rampant in the CBD market, according to The Fashion Law. The labeling issues seen so far have involved products, not sold by Lord Jones, which either contained ingredients on top of CBD or instead of the CBD the products claim they contain. Some products have been shown to contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the high-producing component of marijuana, while others have been shown to contain much lower levels of CBD than they claim.
In either of these cases, CBD products are being sold with labeling that falsely describes what the product actually contains. So far, there is nothing to suggest that Lord Jones follows either of these practices.
