A woman holds supplements in her hands. If you have purchased SAM-e supplements for the treatment of a variety of health conditions, you may have been sold mislabeled supplements.

Multiple retailers are suspected of labeling their supplements as containing more SAM-e than is actually there. Victims who have bought mislabeled  supplements from these businesses may be entitled to hire an attorney and pursue compensation through a class action lawsuit.

What’s Really In Those Supplements?

Attorneys are investigating consumer reports that many retailers may be selling supplements whose labels are misleading about the levels of SAM-e contained in the supplements. It’s possible some of these supplements contain as little as 12 percent of the amount of SAM-e promised on their labels.

Brands that are suspected of selling counterfeit or mislabeled SAM-e supplements include:

  • Vitamins Because You Are Worth It
  • NusaPure
  • aSquared Nutrition
  • We Like Vitamins
  • BoostCeuticals
  • Healthy Way
  • Mental Refreshment

These supplements may be sold through Amazon or brick-and-mortar retailers.

About SAM-e Supplements

SAM-e
, also known as ademetionine or S-adenosylmethionine, is a synthetic form of a naturally produced amino acid compound. The body naturally produces this compound, and it is thought to play an important role in mood regulation, immune function, and pain perception. Low levels of methionine, folate, or vitamin B12 may lead to low levels of naturally produced SAM-e.

SAM-e supplements are sold as tablets, capsules, and powders. Although no standard doses have been set for SAM-e, between 200 mg and 400 mg are recommended daily for treating osteoarthritis, and between 800 mg to 1,600 mg a day for depression.

SAM-e Supplement Uses

SAM-e supplements are used to treat a variety of chronic health conditions, including osteoarthritis and depression. Other conditions that may be treated by SAM-e supplements include anxiety, fibromyalgia, premenstrual syndrome, migraines, or general chronic pain. Additionally, the supplements may enhance mental performance and cognition, improve liver health, and assist with quitting smoking. Some studies on the effectiveness of SAM-e for pain relief have indicated that the supplement is as effective as NSAID painkillers for symptom relief. The supplement may also be taken to help with liver problems during pregnancy.

People who suffer from Parkinson’s disease, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, or bipolar disorder should not take SAM-e unless they consult with their doctor, as the supplement may worsen their symptoms or interact poorly with other medications.

Side Effects of SAM-e

Possible side effects of SAM-e include anxiety or nervousness, dry mouth, dizziness, upset stomach, constipation or diarrhea, headache, insomnia, nausea and vomiting, skin rash, or low blood sugar. High quantities of SAM-e may result in mania, or an elevated mood. The supplement may also result in an allergic reaction for some people, although this is a rare side effect.

If you have purchased SAM-e supplements from brands including Vitamins Because You Are Worth It, NusaPure, aSquared Nutrition, We Like Vitamins, BoostCeuticals, Healthy Way, or Mental Refreshment, you may have been sold fake supplements. Purchasers of mislabeled SAM-e supplements may be able to pursue compensation and reimbursement by filing a class action lawsuit against these retailers.
