Calif. Rainbow Light Vitamins Class Action Settlement

A $1.75 million Rainbow Light prenatal vitamin class action settlement has received final approval and is now accepting claims for benefits.

The Rainbow Light class action settlement ends claims that the company’s prenatal vitamins contain lead, though they are advertised to be free of heavy metals.

Class Members include those customers who purchased Rainbow Light prenatal or postnatal vitamins in California between July 28, 2015 and Oct. 3, 2019.

The Rainbow Light class action claimed that the brand’s prenatal and postnatal vitamins were explicitly advertised as “free of heavy metals” and made with ingredients “with the lowest detectable lead level.” These advertisements were allegedly false according to test results of the vitamins showing above 0.2 micrograms of lead in a dose – above the lowest detectable lead level.

The Rainbow Light class action settlement to resolve these allegations was reached with Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, and was agreed to by The Clorox Company, owners of Rainbow Light Nutritional Systems, and Nutranext, the makers of the vitamins at issue.

The settlement was reached after the City Attorney’s Office conducted independent testing on the Rainbow Light vitamins, and determined that the products did contain lead. Reportedly, the lead levels present in the vitamins meant that users could ingest more than 0.2 micrograms per day.

After conducting this research with the help of an independent lab, the City Attorney’s Office approached Rainbow Light. The vitamin maker then agreed to change the labeling on the products to eliminate allegedly misleading information.

In addition to providing benefits to customers who purchased Rainbow Light vitamins, the settlement reached with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office makes certain requirements of the vitamin makers, and has required them to pay fines. Rainbow Light has been fined $250,000 in costs and civil penalties related to the alleged mislabeling of their vitamins.

Rainbow Light has agreed to test its vitamins every six months, to make sure that the lead levels in their vitamins stay below the level of 0.2 micrograms of lead daily. If the lead levels do exceed this level, the company is required to inform the City Attorney’s Office and investigate the problem.

The company will then be required to provide an update within 45 days to inform the office of any updates, and will be required to produce a new lot of vitamins within 120 days that contain less than 0.2 micrograms per day of lead.

In total, $1.5 million of the $1.75 million will be made available to consumers in the form of a Rainbow Light class action settlement fund. Class Members can file a claim for benefits on the Rainbow Light class action settlement website which is currently accepting claims.

The website does not specify how much money each Class Member may receive from the Rainbow Light class action settlement, but explains the amount of money that each person receives will depend on how may people file claims for benefits. Benefits that Class Members will receive will not exceed the amount that they paid for the vitamins, and will be dependent on how much money they spent. 

Refunds will be calculated and distributed after the claims period is over. An exact date has not yet been set for when the refund checks will be mailed, but the website notes that the checks will most likely be mailed in late 2020.

The deadline to file a claim for benefits from the Rainbow Light prenatal vitamins false ad class action settlement is Aug. 3, 2020.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include those customers who purchased Rainbow Light prenatal or postnatal vitamins in California between July 28, 2015 and Oct. 3, 2019.

Potential Award

The website does not specify how much money each Class Member may receive from the Rainbow Light class action settlement. Benefits that Class Members will receive will vary based on how much customers spent, and will not exceed the amount that they paid for the vitamins.

Proof of Purchase

Proof of purchase is not required, but Class Members must specify the type and quantity of products purchased, how much they paid for the products, as well as the name and location of the store where they purchased the products.
