About SAM-e Supplements

SAM-e
, also known as ademetionine or S-adenosylmethionine, is a synthetic form of a naturally produced amino acid compound. The body naturally produces this compound, and it is thought to play an important role in mood regulation, immune function, and pain perception. Low levels of methionine, folate, or vitamin B12 may lead to low levels of naturally produced SAM-e.

SAM-e supplements are sold as tablets, capsules, and powders. Although no standard doses have been set for SAM-e, between 200 mg and 400 mg are recommended daily for treating osteoarthritis, and between 800 mg to 1,600 mg a day for depression.
