How Does Ring Security Work?

Essentially, Ring Security uses several small monitoring products to set up an easy-to-use home security system. The system has three modes: Disarmed, Home, and Away, and these modes can be controlled through a smartphone app or the system’s keypad. Notably, however, the Ring alarm system on its own only offers self-monitoring features—push notifications and alerts sent to your phone to alert you that the system has detected an issue. In order to access the company’s professional monitoring system, customers need to subscribe to a Ring Protect Plan.

What is Ring Protect Plan?

The Ring Protect Plan is the professional monitoring system offered through Ring, which will automatically contact emergency services in case of a detected issue. When your Ring alarm detects an issue, regardless of whether or not you have subscribed to a Ring Protect Plan, the system will alert your phone to what’s wrong.

If you don’t have a Ring security subscription to the Protect Plan, this notification will be the end of what Ring offers, and you will be left to self-monitor the situation. If you do subscribe to a Ring Protect Plan, the company’s support line will attempt to get in touch with you to see if emergency assistance is required.

If you need help, whether you answer and ask for help or can’t answer for some reason, they’ll automatically put you in touch with the emergency response the system deems necessary—the fire department in case of a detected carbon monoxide issue and the police in other instances.

There are a couple of Ring Protect Plans currently being offered, and only one actually offers this professional monitoring. The Basic plan is $3 per month and offers video history, saving, and sharing. The Ring Protect Plus plan, at $10 per month is required to access professional monitoring.
