Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced recalls last week for products that may pose injury to consumers. Here are Top Class Actions’ top recalls for the week of Sept. 4.

Hyundai recalls Elantra HEV vehicles

Hyundai Motor America initiated a recall affecting approximately 38,000 model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) due to concerns over a potential software issue. While the automaker estimates that only 1% of the recalled Hyundai Elantra HEVs are affected by this software defect, they emphasize that it could increase the risk of accidents under specific vehicle speed conditions.

Hyundai stated that the recalled vehicles’ motor control unit software could “detect a transmission/drive motor synchronization fault” resulting in a “fail-safe” condition that causes unintended acceleration.

The company will notify affected owners via first-class mail, providing instructions on how to visit a Hyundai dealership to have the software in their motor control units updated. This remedy will be offered at no cost to owners.

Frigidaire gas cooktop recalled

Frigidaire announced a recall affecting approximately 77,000 of its stainless steel gas cooktops, available in both 30-inch four-burner and 36-inch five-burner configurations. The Frigidaire gas cooktop recall pertains to specific models: FFGC3026SS (with serial numbers 1F00590006 to 1F11090155 and 3F53705075 to 3F01309052) and FFGC3626SS (with serial numbers 1F00590020 to 1F10390342 and 3F53703455 to 3F00806110).

The recall was initiated due to a potential safety hazard arising from the plastic knobs used to control the cooktop. These knobs can break, posing a significant risk of gas leaks and fire hazards.

Electrolux, the parent company, reported 63 incidents of control knobs cracking or breaking, with one incident leading to a gas leak resulting in minor injuries, and one reported fire incident.

To address the issue, Electrolux is urging customers to stop using the affected Frigidaire gas cooktops and contact Electrolux Group for free replacement knobs featuring a black shaft. Customers can continue using knobs with a chrome-colored shaft safely.

Prime-Line glass door knob recall

Prime-Line initiated a recall involving approximately 167,000 glass doorknobs due to concerns that they may develop cracks and separate from the doorknob assembly, posing a laceration hazard. This recall also extends to around 10,625 glass doorknobs sold in Canada, as reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in a recall notice published on August 31.

The glass doorknobs were marketed under various brands, including Defender Security, Gate-House, and Reliabilt, and featured fluted glass knobs available in finishes such as bronze, brass, satin nickel, matte black, and chrome. The recalled doorknobs were sold at prices ranging from $20 to $45 between February 2022 and April 2023, available at home improvement stores across the United States and through online retailers like Amazon.com and Wayfair.com.

Prime-Line took action after receiving five reports of these doorknobs breaking and causing laceration injuries that required stitches.  Consumers who have purchased these glass doorknobs are advised to discontinue use immediately and reach out to Prime-Line for instructions on how to obtain a full refund.

Victor dog food recalled by Mid American Pet Food

Mid America Pet Food issued a recall for 644 cases of its Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Hi-Pro Plus, following concerns that the product may have been exposed to salmonella contamination. The recall pertains to specific lot number 1000016385, which was produced in Mount Pleasant, Texas, and is associated with five-pound bags of dog food with a best-by date of April 30, 2024.

The recall was prompted by the detection of salmonella in a single sample of the food during testing conducted by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. Despite the recall, Mid America Pet Food has not received any reports of illness related to the affected product thus far.

Pet owners in possession of the recalled dog food are urged to safely dispose of it in a manner that prevents both animals and humans from accessing it. Additionally, they should thoroughly clean and sanitize any bowls and storage containers used for the food and wash and sanitize their hands if they have had contact with the impacted product.
