Automaker Stelllantis issued four separate recalls in recent months for concerns involving vehicle safety.
The Stellantis auto recalls involved multiple vehicle models, including certain Ram 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks; Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler vehicles; Fiat 124 Spider vehicles; Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer and Dodge Durango SUVs; Ram Promaster and Chrysler Pacifica vans; and Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs.
In addition to the recalls, a consumer filed a proposed class action lawsuit in June over claims Stellantis sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.
Stellantis recalls Ram 1500 pickup trucks over turn signal malfunction concerns
Stellantis issued a recall for nearly 130,000 Ram 1500 pickup trucks this month over concerns the vehicles’ turn signal self-canceling feature could malfunction.
The recall involves certain model year 2023-2024 Ram 1500 pickup trucks produced between March 24, 2023, and Dec. 27, 2023.
Stellantis says the issue causes the recalled Ram 1500 pickup trucks to fail to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards and increases the risk of an accident.
“A turn signal which does not self-cancel and remains active after a completed turn may cause surrounding drivers to misunderstand the intent to change vehicle direction, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning,” the Ram 1500 recall says.
Jeep Gladiator, Wrangler vehicles recalled over instrument panel cluster concerns
Stellantis issued a recall for 32,863 of its model year 2020-2024 Jeep Gladiator and model year 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles last month over concerns their instrument panel clusters can short circuit and fail.
The automaker says a failure of the instrument panel cluster in the recalled Jeep vehicles would prevent critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, from displaying, increasing the risk of a crash.
“An (instrument panel cluster) that is not visible to the driver may result in the driver’s attention being diverted from the driving task while trying to locate a desired display, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning,” the Jeep recall says.
Stellantis says the issue also keeps the recalled Jeep vehicles from complying with federal motor vehicle safety requirements.
Stellantis recalls 1M+ vehicles over rearview camera concerns
Stellantis issued a recall for more than 1 million of its vehicles in June over concerns they were equipped with rearview cameras that could fail to display an image when the vehicle is put in reverse.
The recall involves certain model year 2022 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks; Ram 3500 pickup trucks with a cab chassis of less than 10,000 lbs.; 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer SUVs; 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica vans; 2021-2022 Dodge Durango SUVs; 2022-2023 Ram Promaster vans; and 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs.
At the time, Stellantis said it planned to remedy the issue by updating the radio software on the recalled vehicles’ so that they would meet federal rear visibility requirements.
“Vehicles with suspect radio software may not display the rearview image during a backing event under certain conditions,” the Stellantis recall says.
15,000+ Fiat 124 Spider vehicles recalled over front air bag issues
Stellantis issued a recall for more than 15,000 of its model year 2017-2020 Fiat 124 Spider vehicles in September over concerns their front air bags could deploy with excessive force during a crash.
The recall involves certain model year 2017-2020 Fiat 124 Spider vehicles produced between March 1, 2016, and Aug. 31, 2020.
Stellantis says the issue makes the recalled Fiat 124 Spider vehicles non-compliant with federal motor vehicle safety requirements regarding occupant crash protection safety standards.
“An air bag that deploys with excessive force can increase the risk of injury,” the Fiat recall says.
Stellantis sold vehicles with defective infotainment systems, class action claims
A group of Stellantis vehicle owners filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker in June over claims their vehicles were equipped with defective infotainment systems that failed to work as promised.
The class action lawsuit argues certain Stellantis vehicles, including certain Wrangler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, contain defective Uconnect infotainment systems with unreliable bluetooth and GPS systems.
“The class vehicles’ infotainment systems are plagued by a series of issues stemming from a common defect that causes many features—including the navigation, audio system, and Bluetooth connectivity—to malfunction, operate intermittently, and even become inoperable,” the Stellantis class action says.
The allegedly defective infotainment systems also present a safety risk by virtue of the backup camera display potentially failing, along with unexpected audio or video errors that could distract a driver, the Stellantis class action alleges.
