Stanley recall overview:

  • Who: Stanley recalled about 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs.
  • Why: The lids can detach, posing a burn hazard.
  • Where: The Stanley recall is active in the United States.

Stanley recalled about 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs after receiving dozens of complaints from consumers about the lid detaching, some of whom received burns from hot liquid that required medical attention.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published the recall Dec. 12. It applies to all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the United States.

According to the recall, the mugs’ lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use and posing a burn hazard.

Stanley says it received 91 reports worldwide of the recalled travel mugs’ lids detaching during use, resulting in 38 burn injuries. Eleven of those customers required medical attention, the recall states. Sixteen of the reports came from the United States, with two customers reporting burn injuries related to the travel mugs.

Stanley is not facing legal action, but Top Class Actions follow recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

Stanley mugs sold at various retail stores, recall states

Stanley warned customers to immediately stop using the recalled travel mugs and contact the company to receive a free replacement lid, including shipping.

It sold the recalled mugs at Amazon.com, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and other stores nationwide and online from June 2016-Dec. 2024 for $20-$50, depending on the model, the recall states.

In February, consumers hit Pacific Market International with two class actions after the company admitted to using lead in Stanley cups’ vacuum seal.
