Recall issued for Colsen fire pits due to burn risk

Colsen has recalled more than 89,000 fire pits after dozens of reports of flames escaping, causing serious burns and even requiring surgery and causing permanent disfigurement for some consumers.

The fire pit recall was published to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website on Oct. 17. It applies to about 89,500 Colsen-brand fire pits, including Colsen fire pits previously manufactured by another company.

The recall comes after the CPSC received 31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping from the concrete container, resulting in 19 burn injuries.

Two incidents resulted in third degree burns to more than 40% of victims’ bodies, the CPSC said, and at least six incidents have involved surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.

The recall notice says the risk comes when refilling the fire pit reservoir, leading to “flame jetting,” when fire flashes back to the alcohol container and suddenly propels burning alcohol out of the container and onto people nearby, the recall states.

“Use of the recalled fire pits can lead to injury quickly and unexpectedly, causing burns in less than one second that can be serious and deadly,” it says.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fire pits and dispose of them, the company says. The firm says that it stopped selling Colsen-branded fire pits less than one year after it acquired the product business and “does not have the financial resources to offer a remedy to consumers.”

The fire pits were sold online at Amazon.com, Wayfair, Walmart, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta and TikTok from Jan. 2020 to July 2024 for between $40 and $90.

Last month, Jo-Ann Stores issued a recall for about 9,700 of its Place & Time-brand battery-operated desk lamps over concerns their battery compartment can overheat while the USB charging cord is in use, creating a fire hazard.
