Costco, Lowe’s Backyard Play Systems Outdoor Playhouse Recall Overview:

  • Who: Backyard Play Systems is recalling outdoor playsets sold under various brands at major retailers, including Lowe’s and Costco.
  • Why: The company says children can become trapped in a gap in the playhouse’s roof.
  • Where: Recalled units were sold in the United States and Canada.

Costco and Lowe’s sold an outdoor playhouse for kids that is now being recalled in the United States and Canada due to the risk of children getting trapped in its roof.

Backyard Play System announced the recall of its outdoor playsets on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website on Nov. 4.

The playhouses were sold under various brands at Costco and Lowe’s, either as Yardline Play Systems’ Turbo Racer or Cloud Racer models, or Gorilla Playsets’ Captain’s Fort or Fort Highlander models.

According to the recall, the wooden parts used to reinforce and create a decorative gable design on the wooden roof pose an entrapment hazard to children.

“Children can become trapped in the gap between the lower part of the roof structure and the bottom of the gable decoration,” the recall says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits. No injuries have been reported so far, the company says.

About 5,100 of the playhouses were sold in the United States, and 200 in Canada. The forts were sold online from March 2019 through May 2021 for about $1,000.

The playsets include a solid wood roof with a lookout window, slides, swings, a rock-climbing wall, and other play features.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled playsets and contact Backyard Play Systems for a free repair kit which includes replacement wood parts, hardware and instructions,” the company says.

Backyard is also offering to send a representative to perform the repair at no charge.  It is contacting all known purchasers directly.

Thousands of products are recalled every year because they were deemed defective or dangerous.

This includes cars, children’s products—like in this case—baby products, pharmaceutical drugs, medical devices, food products, pet products, supplements, and more. Check here daily for the latest recalls you should know about.
