Children’s Wood Wagons Overview:

  • Who: Colony Brands is recalling around 20 of its wood wagons for children.
  • What: The wagons were found to contain excess levels of lead paint, which can pose serious and permanent health risks for children.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Colony Brands is recalling around 20 of its wood wagons for children over fears lead paint found on various parts of the wagons could harm children’s health and development.

According to a recall notice posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the paint on the wood wagons, the plastic handles and the red plastic cover contain levels of lead that violate a federal lead paint ban.

Excessive levels of lead can be toxic or cause other health problems to young children if the paint is ingested, the notice says. So far, no injuries or illnesses have been reported to the company.

The wagons, which measure 34 inches in height by 23 inches wide, have a red and white metal frame and black handle grips and wheel, and come with a red plastic covering. The lot number 210503SSM is printed on the bottom of the wagon, the recall notice states. The wagons were sold in Montgomery Ward’s and Ginny’s catalogs and online at Wards.com and Ginnys.com from September 2021 through October 2021 for about $100.

Colony Brands Urges Consumers To Take Wagons From Children, Return For Full Refund

Colony Brands is urging all consumers to immediately take the recalled wagons away from children and return them for a full refund. It adds that retailers are contacting all known purchasers to arrange returns and providing prepaid shipping labels and return instructions.

Consumers will receive a full refund once the recalled product is returned.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead can cause learning and behavior problems, with lead poisoning hurting the brain and nervous system that can be irreparable. Lead in a child’s body can slow down growth and development, damage hearing and speech, and make it hard to pay attention and learn, the agency says.

It adds that most children get lead poisoning from paint in homes built before 1978 as when old paint cracks and peels, it makes dangerous dust. The dust is so small you cannot see it, and most children get lead poisoning when they breathe or swallow the dust on their hands and toys.

In November, Backyard Play System also had to recall a children’s toy, but in this case it was due to a risk of entrapment. Backyard Play System announced the recall of its outdoor playhouses due the risk of children getting trapped in its roof. The playhouses, which were sold under various brands at Costco and Lowe’s, included wooden parts used to reinforce and create a decorative gable design on the wooden roof which pose an entrapment hazard to children.
