Black pepper recall overview:

  • Who: UBC Food Distributors has recalled plastic containers of Baraka Ground Black Pepper.
  • Why: The black pepper may be contaminated with salmonella.
  • Where: The black pepper recall is effective nationwide in the United States.

A Michigan-based food distributor has recalled containers of ground black pepper that were distributed nationwide.

The black pepper recall notice was published June 3 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website.

It applies to Baraka Ground Black Pepper distributed by UBC Food Distributors and sold in 7-ounce plastic containers with an expiration date of January 2026 and Universal Product Code 8 22514 26626 6.

The pepper is being recalled because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, the notice says. Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

State testing picks up potential contamination

The black pepper recall was initiated after a routine state surveillance sample collected by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets tested positive for the presence of salmonella in some packages of Baraka Ground Black Pepper, according to the recall notice.

“Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem,” the notice says.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recall. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the infection can lead to more serious, long term illnesses like arthritis.

Customers urged to return recalled black pepper

Consumers who purchased the recalled Baraka Black Pepper are “urged” to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, the FDA says.

The recalled pepper was distributed to retail stores nationwide.

Last month, Natural Sourcing International recalled one lot of its 32-ounce Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds sold at Walmart stores due to potential salmonella contamination.
