Ground beef recall overview:

  • Who: Michigan-based meat packing company Wolverine Packing Co. is recalling about 167,000 pounds of ground beef products.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the ground beef products may have been contaminated with E. coli.
  • Where: The recalled ground beef products were distributed to restaurants nationwide.

A Michigan-based meat packing company is recalling nearly 170,000 pounds of ground beef products distributed to restaurants nationwide over concerns they may have been contaminated with E. coli.

The recall involves fresh ground beef products with a use by date of Nov. 14, 2024, and frozen ground beef products labeled with a production date of Oct. 22, 2024, according to a recall alert published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

All of the recalled ground beef products originated from Wolverine Packing Co. and bear the establishment number “EST. 2547B,” inside their USDA mark of inspection, according to the recall.

Restaurants urged not to serve recalled ground beef products

The FSIS said it became aware of the issue after it was notified by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture earlier this year that a group of consumers reported they became ill after consuming ground beef.

“(The) FSIS determined that there was a link between the ground beef products from Wolverine Packing Co. and this illness cluster,” the ground beef recall says.

Restaurants are urged not to serve the recalled ground beef products and to either throw them away or return them to their original place of purchase.

Consumers with more questions about the recall can contact Wolverine Packing company rep Don Tanner by telephone at 248-761-1533.

The FSIS issued a public health alert earlier this year over concerns ground beef products made by Greater Omaha Packing Co. were potentially contaminated with E. coli
