Health officials in Los Angeles have connected a local case of hepatitis A to ongoing recalls involving frozen organic strawberries sold at stores, including Costco, Trader Joe’s and other stores.

The recalls were issued in March over concerns the recalled organic strawberries — which were grown on farms in Baja, Mexico — were contaminated with the hepatitis A virus.

Los Angeles health officials, meanwhile, have confirmed the recalled organic strawberries were distributed to local stores. Officials are advising consumers to not eat the strawberries and either throw them out or return them to the store.

Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not sell, serve, or eat recalled frozen strawberries. These recalled products should be returned or thrown away,” the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in a news release.

Recalled organic frozen strawberries linked to seven illnesses, two hospitalizations

The recalled organic frozen strawberries include Kirkland Signature 4-pound bags of Frozen Organic Whole Strawberries manufactured by California Splendor, a number of frozen strawberries produced by Scenic Fruit and Made-With frozen strawberries sold by Meijer.

The frozen strawberry recalls are linked to a total of seven illnesses and two hospitalizations, with a total of five cases in Washington and two in California, according to an update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this month.

The FDA issued a separate warning in May 2022 advising consumers not to eat, serve or sell FreshKampo or HEB brand organic strawberries over concerns they were connected to an outbreak of hepatitis A infections in the U.S. and Canada.
