- Why: The recall follows a major Lyons Magnus beverage recall due to microbial contamination.
- Where: The recall is nationwide in the United States.
A massive recall of beverage products made by Lyons Magnus has had an avalanche effect with King’s Hawaiian announcing it recalled certain pretzel products because they contain a recalled Lyons Magnus product.
On Aug. 11, King’s Hawaiian announced on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website that it voluntarily recalled its pretzel slider buns, pretzel hamburger buns and pretzel bites products. The specific product codes can be seen here.
The company recalled the products out of an abundance of caution following a recall of an ingredient used in the pretzel products from Lyons Magnus, the recall notice says.
In July, Lyons Magnus issued a massive recall of nutritional and beverage products made under popular brands like Oatly and Stumptown due to potential microbial contamination.
The company announced Aug. 10 that it had expanded its recall of 53 products by more than 100 additional product codes, including products made by Organic Valley.
Lyons Magnus recalled the products due to the potential for microbial contamination, including from the organisms cronobacter sakazakii and clostridium botulinum, which can cause severe food poisoning.
Affected pretzel products should be thrown out, according to recall
While no illnesses associated with King’s Hawaiian pretzel products have been reported, and no pathogens have been found in any King’s Hawaiian products to date, the recall is being conducted to ensure consumer safety, the company says.
“This recall does not impact any other King’s Hawaiian products, as no other products use this ingredient from Lyons Magnus,” the King’s Hawaiian recall notice states. “King’s Hawaiian will resume producing all pretzel products once the company has ensured all current product has been disposed of and has confirmed the safety of all ingredients.”
Consumers who have any King’s Hawaiian Pretzel Slider Buns, King’s Hawaiian Pretzel Hamburger Buns or King’s Hawaiian Pretzel Bites should dispose of the product, according to the notice.
Consumers can contact King’s Hawaiian at 877-695-4227, Monday through Friday, to request a replacement product.
In related news, on Aug. 11, Lyons Magnus was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it should have warned consumers its products could be impacted by microbial contamination.
