  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the vehicles could experience a sudden loss of motive power due to a short circuit.
  • Where: The recall affects certain Hyundai vehicle owners nationwide.

Hyundai Motor America issued a recall for more than 13,000 model year 2024 Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles over concerns they could experience an unexpected loss of power while driving.

The recall involves 13,511 Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles produced between Jan. 11, 2024 and Feb. 18, 2024; Jan. 12, 2024, and March 4, 2024; and Jan. 12, 2024, and Feb. 8, 2024, respectively.

The automaker said it is concerned an electrical short could occur in the vehicles, potentially causing the malfunction indicator light to illuminate and/or the vehicle to experience a sudden loss of motive power during operation.

“Sudden, unexpected loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash, especially at high speeds,” the Hyundai recall says.

Hyundai to reimburse vehicle owners for out-of-pocket expenses incurred

Hyundai said it will be contacting owners of the recalled vehicles with instructions to bring them  to a Hyundai dealer to receive an EGR valve assembly replacement, free of charge.

The automaker will also be providing owners of the recalled vehicles with reimbursements for any out-of-pocket expenses they have already incurred while fixing the issue, according to the Hyundai recall.

Hyundai said it plans to notify affected vehicle owners by certified mail on June 28, 2024.

A separate Hyundai recall was issued in April for 31,440 model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Genesis vehicles due to assembly issues that can cause the fuel pump to shut down.
