Honda recalls overview:

  • Who: American Honda Motor recalled around 391,800 lawnmowers and pressure washer engines.
  • Why: Honda initiated the recall over concerns it manufactured the products with defective camshafts that could cause the starter rope to suddenly retract when pulled.
  • Where: The recalls affect consumers nationwide.

American Honda Motor issued a recall for around 391,800 of its Honda lawnmowers and pressure washer engines over concerns they are equipped with defective camshafts in their engines that can cause the starter rope to suddenly retract when pulled.

Honda received 2,197 reports of camshaft failures and seven minor injuries linked to the recall, which the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published Sept. 14.

The recall involves Honda HRN216 and HRX217K6 lawnmowers and GCV170/200 G5B pressure washer engines. The serial number for the pressure washer engines is located on a flat spot on the engine, while the model and serial number for the lawnmowers are printed on a label on the upper rear of the lawnmower’s deck.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Honda lawnmowers and pressure washer engines and contact an authorized Honda Power Equipment dealer to schedule an appointment for a free repair and inspection, the recall states.

Honda lawnmowers, pressure washer engines sold nationwide, recall states

Honda sold the lawnmowers nationwide from May 2022 to June 2023 at Honda Power Equipment dealers; retail stores Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Lowes and Northern Tool; and a number of farm, agricultural and rental stores for $550 to $1,100.

The company sold the pressure washer engines nationwide at Lowes, Home Depot and other retail stores from June 2022 to August 2023 for $370 to $550.

Consumers who have more questions about the recall can contact Honda directly by phone at (888) 888-3139 or online.

Kawasaki Motors announced a separate recall involving lawn mowers in March: 33,000 of its lawn mower engines. The company initiated the recall over concerns fuel could leak from the engines, creating a fire hazard.

My father bought this mower GCV170 Model #HRN 216VKAA
Serial MANA 1988302 or 1985302 tag is hard to read, I mow with mower bc my father was in bad shape but has since passed, I need to know what my options are bc it pulled back once hard no injuries but motor smokes since that happened plus we were going to return it anyway bc it is not a very stable mower, it bounces like crazy like a toy not happy at all , but my dad got worse and passed, I’m almost positive he bought with his bank or credit card that is no longer viable, I sent in warranty card but never got an info or anything from you concerning this problem, not happy at all with the 40HP Honda outboard my dad bought in 2019 , biggest piece of junk I’ve ever seen in 53 years of boating, had nothing nothing but problems with it , 900 $ for fuel pump after two seasons of use and that was just one of many, sorry my dad bought it, $8000 ridiculous

My forearm and fingers were injured by the recoil snap back while trying to start my HRX 217 (recalled) lawnmower. I saw mr doctor that day where he wrote me a note referring me to physiotherapy for treatment. I am currently in touch with Honda and they have requested my dr. note in deciding whether they will replace my lawnmower. Maybe they should consider pain and suffering?
Please feel free to advise. I believe they are making a decision asap.

We own the lawnmower but have been unable to have it repaired. We even bought extended warranty coverage to no avail. Please add me to list.
