  • Who: Honda has recently been in the headlines over a number of recalls and class action lawsuits.ย
  • Why: The Honda recalls and class action lawsuits involve concerns relating to brake and rear view camera defects, electric power steering system issues and an alleged variable timing control defect.ย
  • Where: The Honda recalls and class actions affect consumers nationwide.ย

Honda has been in the headlines recently on account of several recalls and class action lawsuits filed against the automaker.ย

The Honda recalls have been in regard to brake and rear view camera defects, while the class action lawsuits allege issues with its vehiclesโ€™ electric power steering and variable timing control systems.ย

Honda recalls more than 124,000 vehicles over unexpected loss of brake function

Honda recalled more than 124,000 Civic, Passport, and Pilot vehicles late last month over concerns the vehicles could suffer an unexpected loss of brake function, potentially resulting in a crash.ย

The recall, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published June 29, applies to certain model year 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles.

Honda says it received two warranty claims related to the recall since September 2022, with no reports of crashes, injuries or deaths connected to the issue.ย

Honda recalls nearly 400 vehicles over defective brake hold concerns

Honda initiated another recall last month for nearly 400 of its model year 2023 Civic, Accord, Acura RDX and Acura Integra vehicles over concerns they were manufactured with defective brake holds.ย

The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the brake holds were damaged in production, causing the affected Honda vehicles to move while the brake hold is activated.ย

Honda says it has not received any reports of injury connected to the recall and plans to contact all impacted vehicle owners by mail starting July 24.ย

Honda recalls more than 1.1 million Odyssey, Pilot, Passport vehicles over rearview camera concerns

Honda recalled more than 1.1 million of its Odyssey, Pilot, and Passport vehicles in June over concerns they were equipped with defective rearview cameras that may not display properly.ย

The recall, which the NHTSA published June 15, applies to model year 2018-2023 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2022 Honda Pilot and 2019-2023 Honda Passport vehicles.ย

โ€œA rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driverโ€™s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,โ€ the Honda recall states.

As of June 8, Honda says it received 273,870 warranty claims related to the recall, with no reports of injuries or death.ย

Honda knowingly sold vehicles with defective variable timing control actuators, says class action

More than a dozen individuals filed a class action lawsuit against Honda earlier this month, arguing the automaker concealed a variable timing control actuator defect in some of its vehicles.ย

The group argues the alleged defect can result in catastrophic engine failure, in addition to posing a safety hazard.ย

The alleged timing control actuator defect affects model year 2012-2014 CR-Vs with a 2.4-liter engine, 2012 Accords with an L4 engine and 2012-2015 Crosstours with an L4 engine, according to the Honda class action.ย

Honda is accused of knowing about the alleged defect but deciding to conceal it and continuing to sell the defective R44 Actuator prior to introducing a replacement actuator in February 2016.ย

Honda produced 2022-2023 Civic vehicles with defective electric power steering systems, class action claims

In April, a pair of drivers filed a class action lawsuit against Honda, arguing the automaker manufactured its model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles with defective electric power steering systems.ย

The drivers argue the impacted vehiclesโ€™ electric power steering systems โ€œhave the propensity to โ€˜stick,โ€™ which requires a momentary increase in steering effort that can result in steering overcorrections that could lead to collisions.โ€ย

Honda either knew or should have known about the alleged defect due to its prerelease vehicle testing, according to the Honda class action, which accuses the automaker of failing to disclose the alleged issue to consumers.ย

Also in April, a driver filed a similar class action lawsuit claiming the automaker sold model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles with electric braking systems that can stick when the vehicles are driven at highway speeds.ย

The consumer behind the complaint argues the alleged defect can cause vehicle owners to overcorrect, resulting in an increased risk of a collision.ย

Honda is accused of knowing about the alleged issue but failing to disclose the issue while actively concealing it from the public.ย

    3. Danielle Jesserer says:

I did too and mine was a mess. There were major issues that are only capable of originating with shoddy or faulty manufacturing/parts

  2. Joe Arnold says:

2016 Civic also has sticking steering issues. Iโ€™ve reported it to NTHSB

  3. Moneicia N Hollington says:

    Yea

  4. Theo Haikalis says:

Have a 2022 Honda Civic Sport sedan and I do notice my steering does stick at times only when you let it idle and while driving high speeds on the highway. So how do I get involved with the class action lawsuit

  5. Gretchen Stewart says:

I took my 2013 in to the dealership because it was grinding loud when started. They said it was the actuator and was $600 to fix it. That was about 5 years ago. Still driving it but never got it fixed. Sounds horrible. Please add me to the list. Thanks.

  6. Marc Jones says:

I did report the rear camera issue a year ago. The service department at the dealership said there was nothing wrong. Now, I received the message on the Honda app (no email nor physical mail) stating there is a recall for the issue. Very disappointing as I donโ€™t know if I should even continue with Honda once my lese is up

  7. KimberGirl says:

What are we to do about the Honda CRV variable timing control actuator issue? You donโ€™t have a recall in place or a lawsuit that Iโ€™m aware of? So how can I get this fixed ASAP without paying for it? Youโ€™re telling us about it, but no resolution offered here. Please advise?

  8. Marquell hunter says:

Camera is not working And my alarm keypad is not working.

  9. Jeff Mason says:

I have a white 2016 Acura MDX with paint peeling off of the roof. I went to Goodson Acura to ask for a โ€œguessstimateโ€ to fix it. I asked is this something at a reasonable price or is it going to be really expensive. They took my car to their in-house estimator and came back saying โ€œit was going to be expensive.โ€ So โ€“ not knowing about Hondaโ€™s extended warranty on this well-known defective white paint, I waited on repairing it for a couple of months. I had another issue with the car and went back to Goodson Acura for an estimate and was told that there was an extended warranty on the white paint that had just expired 3 days ago. They told me to contact Honda directly and that Honda was likely to cover this. Surprise โ€“ they were not. Itโ€™t a $3,400 repair and I am very angry. I want to sue Honda or arbitrate. What can I do? How do I sign up? I never got the bulletin on the extended warranty โ€“ I bought the car used from another dealer. However, I did buy a second Acura MDX for my daughter from Goodson before this situation occured. It had issues as well โ€“ with the car shutting off all the time. I took it in and was told it needed a software update โ€“ and it was under an extended warranty. I wish they would inform me of ALL of these scenarios so I can be prepared โ€“ but of course โ€“ the donโ€™t. Neither Honda/Acura nor the dealers proactively communicate any issues to consumers.

  10. Raymond Evans says:

I have a 2017 Accord. It was still under warranty when the rear view camera stopped working. Lyndsey Honda didnโ€™t have part in, told me it would not cost because I brought it in before warranty expired. Once the part was in, they wanted to charge me (warranty had expired) UNBELIEVABLE!
