Honda recalls overview:

  • Who: Honda has recently been in the headlines over a number of recalls and class action lawsuits.
  • Why: The Honda recalls and class action lawsuits involve concerns relating to brake and rear view camera defects, electric power steering system issues and an alleged variable timing control defect.
  • Where: The Honda recalls and class actions affect consumers nationwide.

Honda has been in the headlines recently on account of several recalls and class action lawsuits filed against the automaker.

The Honda recalls have been in regard to brake and rear view camera defects, while the class action lawsuits allege issues with its vehicles’ electric power steering and variable timing control systems.

Honda recalls more than 124,000 vehicles over unexpected loss of brake function

Honda recalled more than 124,000 Civic, Passport, and Pilot vehicles late last month over concerns the vehicles could suffer an unexpected loss of brake function, potentially resulting in a crash

The recall, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published June 29, applies to certain model year 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles.

Honda says it received two warranty claims related to the recall since September 2022, with no reports of crashes, injuries or deaths connected to the issue.

Honda recalls nearly 400 vehicles over defective brake hold concerns

Honda initiated another recall last month for nearly 400 of its model year 2023 Civic, Accord, Acura RDX and Acura Integra vehicles over concerns they were manufactured with defective brake holds

The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the brake holds were damaged in production, causing the affected Honda vehicles to move while the brake hold is activated.

Honda says it has not received any reports of injury connected to the recall and plans to contact all impacted vehicle owners by mail starting July 24.

Honda recalls more than 1.1 million Odyssey, Pilot, Passport vehicles over rearview camera concerns

Honda recalled more than 1.1 million of its Odyssey, Pilot, and Passport vehicles in June over concerns they were equipped with defective rearview cameras that may not display properly.

The recall, which the NHTSA published June 15, applies to model year 2018-2023 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2022 Honda Pilot and 2019-2023 Honda Passport vehicles.

“A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the Honda recall states.

As of June 8, Honda says it received 273,870 warranty claims related to the recall, with no reports of injuries or death.

Honda knowingly sold vehicles with defective variable timing control actuators, says class action

More than a dozen individuals filed a class action lawsuit against Honda earlier this month, arguing the automaker concealed a variable timing control actuator defect in some of its vehicles.

The group argues the alleged defect can result in catastrophic engine failure, in addition to posing a safety hazard.

The alleged timing control actuator defect affects model year 2012-2014 CR-Vs with a 2.4-liter engine, 2012 Accords with an L4 engine and 2012-2015 Crosstours with an L4 engine, according to the Honda class action.

Honda is accused of knowing about the alleged defect but deciding to conceal it and continuing to sell the defective R44 Actuator prior to introducing a replacement actuator in February 2016.

Honda produced 2022-2023 Civic vehicles with defective electric power steering systems, class action claims

In April, a pair of drivers filed a class action lawsuit against Honda, arguing the automaker manufactured its model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles with defective electric power steering systems

The drivers argue the impacted vehicles’ electric power steering systems “have the propensity to ‘stick,’ which requires a momentary increase in steering effort that can result in steering overcorrections that could lead to collisions.”

Honda either knew or should have known about the alleged defect due to its prerelease vehicle testing, according to the Honda class action, which accuses the automaker of failing to disclose the alleged issue to consumers.

Also in April, a driver filed a similar class action lawsuit claiming the automaker sold model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles with electric braking systems that can stick when the vehicles are driven at highway speeds.

The consumer behind the complaint argues the alleged defect can cause vehicle owners to overcorrect, resulting in an increased risk of a collision.

Honda is accused of knowing about the alleged issue but failing to disclose the issue while actively concealing it from the public.

  1. CJ Miser says:

During my morning commute on Friday, I was traveling about 35mph when out of no where the proximity alert goes off and my Honda screeches to a hault, throwing my fiance and I forwarded our seats hard enough to lock the seat belts and cause my fiance to get whiplash! We both thought we had been hit by another motorist, but we was alone on this street luckily! We both picture of the vehicle to visually inspect it, and the only thing that we can figure was that for some reason the Honda had sensed the steel plate that was covering the road due to construction as an object of a much larger size therefore locking up the brakes! It could have ended up worse and since then hasn’t happened again. But I would like to know if there’s some type of recall having to do with the brakes the proximity sensors anything of that sort on the 2019 Honda CRV EX sport turbo package?

  2. Paula says:

I’ve had to replace the VTC thing 3 times. My dash is totally lit up and the lights won’t go off now at all. Thr 4th VTC thing is now starting go bad causing the loud growling noise upon start up again.

I have a 2018 Honda CR-V that I bought new. Last year I had the AC compressor go out with less than 34,000 miles on the vehicle. It cost me around $1,900 to get the repairs done. Been in touch with Honda America who claim that no recall has been made concerning this mechanical issue. I’ve seen a high number of comments from other CR-V owners online complaining about the same problem. Why doesn’t Honda America take responsibility for their use of shoddy materials and issue a recall to correct this particular problem?

      1. Cynthia P Jones says:

My 2018 had to have the whole air conditioner replaced only thing saved me was my extended warranty as my 3 years was up by 2 weeks.

  5. Vonda Smith says:

I have a 2017 Honda Pilot. I just had the brakes done from somewhere other than Honda. $600 later I was told that the brake pads were put on with the wrong brackets and I was very lucky the pads where sideways and ruined my rotors. I will be sending Honda the bill. Honda supposedly inspected my brakes before hand and said nothing was wrong. I also had the fuel injection system fixed when we bought the vehicle a few months ago and it is acting up again.

    1. Reuben says:

I have a 2021 Passport and the vehicle braking system light comes on and the auto braking is applied. We complained but was told it didn’t happen while in the service dept when it was test driven by them. It’s still happening.

      1. Melissa A Valle says:

We’ve had that happen once or twice. Also, the heated mirror fell off and that eventually became a recall. And when the mirror got fixed the tech said there is an audio recall that will take hours to fix. What’s going on? I’ve always loved Honda’s and I love my 21 Passport too!

  6. Miriam Ahumada says:

I had a Honda Pilot 2021, I ended up crashing the vehicle in a car accident due to a brake system defect. It a multiple car accident ( 4 vehicles involded) I was third in line in the crash. My brakes did not worked properly neither the anti crash system.

      1. Brenda A Chandler says:

I have a loud start-up on my 2011 CRV which is getting louder. What do I do? There r numerous recalls on Honda. Is my car a recall issue?

        1. Jose Ortiz says:

My 2013 crv have issues to time already wy the vtc cam gear

      2. Angela Roberts says:

I got a 2017 Honda accord Lx v6 Engine. When I drive it . It cuts off. I when I drive it . It stall

  8. Khanal says:

I purchased a car.from them in 2020 honda civic. I took my car to Honda. Got treated real bad, because I told them that my brake sounds bad. The other issue my gas cover want lock I let them know about that
    Didn’t return back.

    1. Richie G says:

The VTC actuator actually goes beyond the vehicles mentioned. I have a 2014 Accord with the 2.4 liter L4. It started having a pronounced rattle on startup while under warranty. I was told by dealer that was normal for that engine. They changed the oil and it quieted it down a little. Well over the years it got louder. More frequent oil changes didn’t help. Finally I went to another dealer and they knew exactly what it was and quoted me over $1,000 to fix it. Said there was a TSB on it. Honda knew about it for sure but had its customers foot the bill. All the timing components had to be replaced with updated parts that fixed the original problem. So I have about 75,000 miles since warranty expired before I got it fixed finally. Hopefully it didn’t do any long term damage. But you know all car companies do this Bill sh#%. They will issue a TSB letting dealers and technicians know about the problem. A manufacturer defect essentially, but won’t issue a recall. Cost goes to the consumer. Recalls cost car companies millions of dollars. So the less they have to do it the better. I will Say Honda does sometimes make it right by extending warranty’s on cars affected by the problems. The airbag issue a few years ago they were sending mobile teams out knocking on doors and replacing air bags on the side of the street, even if the car barely ran or was close to being sent to the crusher. My sons 2001 Civic with 250,000 miles has had three driver side seat belt buckles replaced All lifetime warranty items, because of a manufacturer defect. Let me tell you it was pretty cool driving his old beat up rusty car into the Honda service department next to all those nice brand new Hondas getting there oil changed. All fixed feee of charge on a $1,000 car. Bottom line, all car companies should recall more than they do, some are worse than others.

  9. Alisha Holler says:
