Hillshire sausage recall overview: 

  • Who: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall for around 15,876 pounds of Hillshire smoked sausage. 
  • Why: The FSIS initiated the recall over concerns the smoked sausage products are contaminated with bone fragments. 
  • Where: HIllshire shipped the products to retail stores in California, New Mexico, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Hillshire Brands Co. initiated a recall for around 15,876 pounds of its blended meat and poultry sausage products over concerns they may be contaminated with bone fragments. 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall Sept. 2. It includes ready-to-eat meat and poultry packed sausage products produced on June 14, 2023. 

The products included in the recall are Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage Made with Pork, Turkey and Beef with the establishment number “EST. 756A” printed on their front packaging, according to the FSIS. 

The regulator says Hillshire shipped the smoked sausage products to retail stores in California, New Mexico, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

One report of injury in connection with Hillshire smoked sausage recall 

There has been one report of an oral injury in connection with consuming one of the recalled Hillshire smoked sausage products, according to the FSIS, which advised consumers who are concerned about an injury or illness to contact their health care provider.

Individuals who purchased any of the recalled Hillshire smoked sausage products should not consume them and should either throw them away or return them to their place of purchase. 

In other news involving Hillshire, in 2021, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit over claims it mislabeled its Jimmy Dean Delights breakfast sandwiches by stating that they were made with whole grain.
