Generator recall overview:

  • Who: Generac recalled about 64,000 portable generators.
  • Why: The generators’ fuel tank can fail to properly vent, causing built-up pressure in the fuel tank that can expel fuel when opened and creating fire and burn hazards.
  • Where: The Generac recall is valid in the United States and Canada.

Generac issued a recall for 64,000 of its portable generators due to a hazard created by improper ventilation of the generators’ fuel tank.

Pressure can build up in the tank and cause fuel to expel when the fuel tank is open, leading to a fire and burn hazards, according to the generator recall.

The Generac recall includes Generac Portable Generators type GP15000E with model numbers G0057341, G0057342, 005734R1 and 005734R2 and type GP17500E with model numbers G0057351, G0057352, 005735R1 and 005735R2.

The name “Generac” and the unit type are printed on both sides of the fuel tank and on the control panel. The model number is printed on a label on the heat shield between the engine and alternator.

3 severe burn injuries, 27 overheating, expelling fuel issues reported, generator recall says

Generac says it received 27 reports of the generators overheating and expelling fuel and three reports of severe burn injuries from the issues. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Consumers should immediately stop using the generators and contact the company for a free repair kit at (888) 391-0503 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday to Friday or online at generac.com/GPenhancements.

Generac recalled generators in the past. Last fall, it reannounced a recall of more than 325,000 Generac portable generators after reports of injuries and finger amputations.
