Fiji water recall overview:

  • Who: Natural Waters of Viti Ltd. issued a recall for 78,533 24-pack cases of Fiji Natural Artesian Water.
  • Why: The company initiated the recall after testing revealed it was contaminated with manganese and three types of bacteria.
  • Where: Natural Waters distributed the Fiji water nationwide through Amazon.

Natural Waters of Viti Ltd. issued a recall for nearly 79,000 cases of Fiji water after testing revealed manganese and three bacterial genera.

The recall, which the company initiated in March, involves Fiji Natural Artesian Water 500 milliliters sold through Amazon.com from Feb. 1, 2024, to March 3, 2024, according to The Wonderful Co., which owns Fiji water. Natural Waters of Viti Ltd. is the bottling plant for Fiji water.

The recall affects Fiji Natural Artesian Water with production dates Nov. 11-13 and 24-25, 2023, The Wonderful Co. tells Top Class Actions. Consumers can find the production dates on the back of the bottle etched below the label.

More than 99% of these bottles have already been reclaimed from warehouses, and the remaining products are on hold and returning to the company, The Wonderful Co. says.

FDA gives Class III designation to Fiji water recall

The FDA downgraded the recall from Class I, its most serious, to Class III, which means exposure to the product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences, according to Newsweek

While studies have not shown it is harmful to consume manganese in food or beverages, some individuals have developed manganese toxicity by drinking water containing high levels of the chemical element, the National Institutes of Health report.

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against The Wonderful Co. in January over claims the company falsely advertised its Fiji bottled water as “natural artesian water” despite it allegedly containing microplastics
