Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 5,700 pounds of its two-pound log Natural Mix dog food as it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The dog food recall was published Jan. 31 to the U.S. Food & Drug administration website. It applies to Blue Ridge Beef two-pound log Natural Mix dog food with Lot No. N25/12/31 and Universal Product Code 854298001054.

According to the recall, food safety watchdogs in North Carolina found the product tested positive for Salmonella. It notified Blue Ridge Beef on Jan. 27.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the recall says.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.

“If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the recall says.

The products were distributed between Jan. 3 and Jan. 24, primarily in retail stores located in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Rhode Island.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled dog food are “urged to return it” to the place of purchase or destroy the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access.
