Magnolia Provision Company, Inc. recalled approximately 497 pounds of beef jerky products that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
The beef jerky recall was announced on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website Sept. 6. The full range of recalled beef jerky products can be seen here.
The Knoxville, TN, company says the affected ready-to-eat beef jerky items were produced on Aug. 25 and shipped to retailers nationwide.
“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ pantries,” the service says in the recall notice. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
Beef jerky recall initiated after Magnolia Provision lab returns positive listeria result
Magnolia Provision discovered the problem when the company received confirmation from its lab that a product sample returned positive for listeria monocytogenes.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far, the company says.
Consumption of food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns, the FSIS says.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the beef jerky recall notice.
An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn, the recall notice says.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 8091” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
In related news, in April,, more than two tons of beef jerky were recalled nationwide as they were produced without the benefit of federal inspection.
