Edgewell Personal Care Co. has expanded a voluntary recall for batches of its Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 after discovering they contained trace levels of benzene, a known human carcinogen.
In an expansion of the recall published to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website Jan. 27, Edgewell said it was adding the product Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 in 6-ounce cans with lot code 20301CF and an expiration date of September 2023 to its original recall.
The company issued the first recall of three lot codes of the product July 29, 2022, saying the unexpected presence of benzene in the products came from propellant used to spray out the contents of the sunscreen product.
The first Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 products to be recalled were sold in 6-ounce cans with the lot codes 20016AF, 20084BF and 21139AF, and with expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023 and April 2024, respectively.
The recall did not affect any other batches.
Recalled Banana Boat sunscreen product sold nationwide
The recalled Banana Boat Hair & Scalp sunscreen products were sold to consumers nationwide through a number of different in-person and online retailers, according to the Banana Boat sunscreen recall.
Edgewell, meanwhile, says it has informed retailers to remove the recalled Banana Boat sunscreen products from their shelves and that it will offer reimbursement to consumers who purchased an affected product.
Consumers who purchased the recalled sunscreen products are also being advised to immediately stop using and appropriately discard them, according to the recall.
Edgewell says consumers can reach out to the company directly by phone at 1-888-686-3988 during a weekday or look online in order to get more information about the recall.

Add me as I have been diagnosed with Leukemia and am now in stage 4 needing treatment. I can’t figure out how I got it, as no one
in my family has it. I do purchase alot of various brands of sunscreen products, sprays especially as they are so much easier to apply.
I also have been diagnosed with skin cancer and so that really made me conscious of the fact I need to protect with sunscreens.
